Chapter 3 - The Trap ClosesThe air inside the executive office grew so thick with tension that it felt impossible to breathe. The two tactical guards advanced another step, their eyes fixed on Javier, waiting for him to make a move.

Javier didn't flinch. Instead, he slowly reached down, picked up my mother’s blue folder, and placed it inside his leather briefcase, snapping the brass latches shut with a crisp, echoing click.

"Step back, Sterling," Javier warned, his voice dead-pan and icy. "You might be the Senior VP of Operations, but this is the CFO's suite. My security clearance outranks yours by two tiers."

"Not anymore, it doesn't," Sterling laughed, a short, ugly sound. He turned to look at Victoria Vance, who was clutching her clipboard like a shield. "Victoria, read him the emergency resolution passed by the executive committee five minutes ago. While you were playing babysitter, Javier, the board held an emergency quorum via conference call. Due to your 'gross negligence and erratic behavior,' you have been temporarily suspended pending a federal investigation into data leakage."

Victoria swallowed hard, refusing to meet Javier’s eyes. She opened her folder and read in a trembling monotone:

"Effective immediately... Javier Ortega is relieved of his duties as Chief Financial Officer of GlobalTech. All company credentials, keys, and digital tokens must be surrendered to HR."

Silence descended upon the room. The glowing neon lights of the skyscrapers outside flickered against the floor-to-ceiling windows as the morning cloud cover began to roll in.

Javier looked at Victoria, then slowly turned his gaze to Sterling. A slow, terrifying smile spread across Javier’s face—not a warm smile, but the expression of a chess grandmaster who had just watched his opponent walk straight into a mating net.

"You managed to call an emergency board quorum, push through a suspension, and mobilize private security... all in the span of ten minutes while I was riding up the elevator?" Javier asked smoothly, walking around his desk. "My, my, Sterling. You must have been sitting on that motion draft for weeks, waiting for just the right moment."

Sterling’s eyes flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of panic that only someone who studied human behavior would catch. But he recovered quickly, puffing out his chest.

"The board acts swiftly when corporate integrity is threatened. Now, hand over the briefcase, Javier. And take the brat with you before we call child protective services for abandoning her in a corporate facility."

"Don't call her a brat," I whispered loudly from the armchair, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet room.

Sterling glared down at me, his face turning an ugly shade of red. "Shut your mouth, kid. You have no idea what kind of sharks you're swimming with."

"Actually," a calm, synthesized voice echoed from the wall-mounted intercom speaker, "she knows a lot more than you think, Mr. Sterling."

Everyone froze.

Javier reached out and tapped the speaker console. "Go ahead, IT Security. Play the audio log."

The entire room went dead silent as a recorded phone call began to broadcast through the high-fidelity office speakers:

Caller: "This is Richard Sterling, extension 402. I need an immediate data override on the Aegis Logistics vendor profile. Route the remaining two million from the Q3 reserve account to the Swiss holding account before the external audit hits tomorrow morning."

System Voice: "Authentication accepted, Mr. Sterling. Transfer initiated."

Sterling’s face drained of every drop of color. The smug, arrogant expression shattered instantly, replaced by absolute, unadulterated terror. He stumbled backward, his shoulder slamming hard against the glass partition.

"That... that's a deepfake," Sterling stammered, his voice cracking wildly. "That's AI-generated! Anyone can fake a voice file in five minutes!"

"It's not a deepfake, Richard," Javier said, stepping forward until he was standing inches away from the trembling executive. He pulled a small, sleek flash drive out of his pocket and held it up to the light. "That audio file was captured by the automated compliance daemon your own department installed three years ago to monitor financial fraud. And you know who wrote the script that triggered the alarm?"

Javier turned his head and looked directly at me.

"Laura Morales."
