Chapter 7 - The Final AuditThe basement server room of GlobalTech was the only place in the entire building completely disconnected from the corporate cloud network—a fortress of humming server racks, blinking blue lights, and freezing cold air conditioning designed to keep the main mainframes from overheating.

It was 2:00 AM on Thursday night.
Inside the glass-walled control booth sat my mother, Javier Ortega, and a heavily armed cyber-security specialist named Marcus.
On the central monitor, lines of green code were cascading downward at blinding speed. Marcus was running the silver flash drive through an isolated sandbox environment to prevent any malicious ransomware from wiping GlobalTech’s central database.
"We're past the primary firewall," Marcus announced, typing furiously on his mechanical keyboard. "Decrypting the container now... Mother of God."
On the screen, a massive organizational chart materialized. But it wasn't an operational map of GlobalTech. It was a sprawling, global web of shell companies, offshore accounts, and political contributions stretching from Zurich to the Cayman Islands, all funneling back to a single ultimate beneficiary: Vanguard Capital.
And at the very top of the corporate hierarchy sat the signature of the majority shareholder and chairperson of the board: Eleanor Sterling-Vance.
Richard Sterling’s mother.
"She didn't just use GlobalTech as a piggy bank," Javier whispered, staring at the screen in utter disbelief. "She was using corporate acquisition funds to launder international arms money through fake infrastructure projects. Sterling was just her frontman."
"And when I threatened to expose Project Aegis," my mother added, her voice deadly calm, "she sent her personal fixer to our office to threaten my daughter."
My mother stood up from her chair, adjusted her blazer, and picked up her leather briefcase.
"Javier," she said, looking straight into the eyes of the man who had given her a second chance. "Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, the quarterly board of directors meeting begins in the main auditorium. Every major investor, federal regulator, and media outlet in the city will be in attendance."

Javier’s lips curved into a sharp, uncompromising smile.
"Let's make sure we have the best presentation of our lives."
