Chapter 2 - The Contract and the Counter-Attack

The fallout downstairs was swift and devastating.

Within twenty minutes, the Ashcombe Foundation gala was over. The socialites, journalists, and high-society parasites fled the Belgravia mansion like rats from a sinking ship, whispering furiously into their smartphones as they piled into waiting town cars. Camilla had already departed through the service exit, her face hidden behind an oversized designer handbag, her engagement dreams incinerated by a single security log.

In the grand foyer, surrounded by discarded champagne flutes and fading orchids, Nathaniel stood face-to-face with his mother.

"You have disgraced this family tonight over a common nanny," Lady Beatrice hissed, clutching her diamond-encrusted clutch as if it were a shield. "You humiliated Camilla, you alienated our most influential donors, and for what? A woman with a checkered past and a fake smile!"

"Checkered past?" Nathaniel’s eyes narrowed. "Her references were vetted by my own team. She is a certified pediatric specialist whose career was derailed by corporate politics—much like the kind you and your friends specialize in. And as for disgraced? The only people who brought disgrace to this house tonight are standing in this room."

Beatrice drew herself up, her aristocratic pride fracturing under his unyielding glare. "You will regret this, Nathaniel. A man in your position cannot afford to be ruled by sentimentality. Without us, Ashcombe Biotech is just a cold laboratory."

"Then let it freeze," Nathaniel replied coldly. "Get out of my house."

Beatrice stared at him, realizing for the first time that her son was no longer the obedient heir she had molded, but a man who had finally learned how to fight for what mattered. With a final, venomous look at Willow, who stood quietly near the staircase holding little Wren in her arms, Beatrice turned and swept out the front doors, slamming them shut behind her.

The heavy silence of the mansion settled over them. Only the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall broke the quiet.

Nathaniel walked slowly toward the stairs. Willow stood on the landing, her copper-blonde hair catching the warm glow of the wall sconces. Nora was resting sleepily against her shoulder, while Wren reached out a small hand, her tiny fingers tangling in the lapel of Nathaniel's suit jacket as he approached.

"You didn't have to do that," Willow said quietly, her gray eyes searching his face. "You could have quietly let me go. It would have saved your evening, your family relations, and your social standing."

"My social standing is built on glass, Willow. It’s about time someone took a hammer to it," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping to a low, intense register. He gently touched Wren's small hand, feeling a sudden, fierce protective surge in his chest. "When I saw the archive footage last night... when I saw how you look after my girls... I realized how much of my life I’ve outsourced to strangers. I won't let you walk away because my mother has toxic taste in friends."

"I didn't come here to be a charity case, Mr. Ashcombe," Willow said, her chin lifting slightly. "I came to do a job. But if my presence in this house is going to invite corporate sabotage and high-society warfare, it might be safer for everyone if I hand in my resignation tomorrow morning."

Nathaniel stepped closer, invading her personal space just enough to make her breath hitch. "Try it," he challenged softly. "And I'll rewrite your contract so fast your head will spin. In fact, effective immediately, your position isn't just nanny anymore."

Willow frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"Starting tomorrow, you're the Director of Domestic Operations and Family Welfare for the Ashcombe estate," Nathaniel said, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Complete with executive decision-making power, a dedicated security detail, and a clause that explicitly bans my mother from entering the property without prior written authorization."

Willow stared at him, stunned into silence. Before she could answer, a sharp chime echoed through the foyer.

Nathaniel pulled out his phone. It was an encrypted notification from his chief technology officer at Ashcombe Biotech.

Nathaniel’s smile vanished. The war wasn't over. It was just moving to the corporate battlefield.
