Chapter 5 - The Emergency at Midnight

Three days later, the Belgravia mansion was bathed in an eerie, unnatural quiet.

Nathaniel was working late in his study, reviewing the final restructuring audits provided by Willow. The corporate takeover attempt by Meridian Health had been completely neutralized, and Ashcombe Biotech's stock prices were climbing steadily. Yet, an inexplicable knot of unease had been tightening in his chest since late afternoon.

Downstairs, the heavy oak front doors suddenly rattled under a series of heavy, authoritative knocks. Before the security detail in the foyer could even reach the latch, the deadbolts clicked open with a master key.

Footsteps echoed sharply across the marble floor—heavy, uninvited, and accompanied by the cold clack of official heels.

Nathaniel bolted out of his study, throwing open the third-floor balcony doors just as three uniformed municipal social workers, flanked by two metropolitan police officers and accompanied by Lady Beatrice herself, marched into the grand foyer.

"What is the meaning of this?" Nathaniel shouted, storming down the sweeping staircase, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

The lead social worker, a stern woman with steel-rimmed glasses holding a thick manila folder, stepped forward. "Mr. Nathaniel Ashcombe? We have an emergency protective custody warrant issued by the London Family Court, sponsored by Lady Beatrice Ashcombe."

Nathaniel froze at the landing, his blood turning to ice. "Custody warrant? On what grounds?"

"Allegations of severe child endangerment, medical negligence, and unauthorized employment of an unqualified, unvetted individual acting as primary guardian," the social worker recited impassionately, flipping open the file. "We have received sworn testimony stating that your home environment is compromised, that your children are being left in the care of a woman with a falsified background, and that the twins are at immediate risk."

From the shadows of the nursery corridor on the second floor, Willow stepped out. She wasn't wearing her corporate suit anymore; she was dressed in a soft cream sweater, her hair loose, holding little Wren in her arms while Nora clutched tightly to her skirt. Her face was completely calm, though her eyes blazed with a fierce, protective fire.

"The background check is fully certified by federal standards, and my medical credentials are on file with the national healthcare registry," Willow said, her voice carrying clearly down into the foyer. She walked slowly down the stairs, placing herself between the authorities and the terrified children. "You don't have a legal leg to stand on, and you know it."

Lady Beatrice stepped out from behind the police officers, a triumphant, venomous smile twisting her painted lips. "You can quote all the paperwork you want, you little fraud. The court listens to family lineage and protective grandmothers, not hired help who infiltrated a grieving father’s home."

The police officers stepped forward, reaching for their cuffs as they closed in on the landing. "Step away from the children, ma'am. By order of the court, we are taking the twins into protective custody pending a full tribunal review."

Nathaniel surged forward, his face dark with a rage so intense the air seemed to shimmer. "Touch my daughters, and I will personally dismantle every political career, judicial appointment, and corporate asset associated with every single person standing in this room before the sun comes up."

The officers hesitated, caught between the terrifying fury of a billionaire CEO and the official seal of a court order.

Just as the tension reached its absolute breaking point, the security terminal on the foyer wall chimed loudly. A large red alert banner flashed across the smart-home display.

Willow didn't flinch. She tapped her wristwatch, which was digitally synced to the estate's main servers.

"Before you cuff anyone," Willow said clearly, looking directly at the lead social worker, "you might want to check the metadata on the emergency petition Lady Beatrice just filed."
