Chapter 1 - The Surgeon and the GhostThe private underground clinic beneath the abandoned meatpacking district smelled of bleach, copper, and damp earth.

Dr. Julian Vance dropped his scalpel into the stainless steel basin. The small metallic clink echoed loudly in the sterile, improvised operating room. He wiped sweat from his forehead with the back of his forearm, looking across the operating table at Vincent Calder.

Vincent’s white shirt was ruined, stained dark with the blood of the woman lying unconscious under the surgical lights.

“You brought me a police detective, Vincent,” Julian said, his voice flat, carrying the weary edge of a man who had patched up too many cartel hitmen and rogue politicians to care about the law. “And not just any detective. The one who has spent the last year trying to put you behind bars for the rest of your natural life.”

“She’s not dying tonight, Julian,” Vincent said quietly. His hands were steady, but his eyes were fixed on Sarah Quinn’s pale, sweat-slicked face.

“The first bullet missed her liver by less than an inch, but it shattered a rib. The second one tore through her lower abdominal wall and caused massive internal bleeding. I had to pull a copper-jacketed hollow-point out of her muscle tissue with my bare fingers ten minutes ago.” Julian crossed his arms, leaning against the counter. “She’s lost more than half her blood volume. Why am I saving her? Give me one good reason that doesn’t end with the Greyhaven Police Department raiding this place with a battering ram.”

Vincent stepped closer to the table. The fluorescent light cast sharp shadows across his face.

“She said a name.”

Julian paused. “Whose name? One of her precinct buddies?”

“Elena.”

The room went entirely silent, save for the rhythmic, mechanical beep of the heart monitor. Julian’s gaze sharpened, losing its professional detachment. He stared at Vincent, searching his face for a sign of a joke or a break.

“Your sister?” Julian asked carefully. “The one from seventeen years ago?”

“Yes.”

“How?” Julian whispered. “Elena has been dead and buried since the winter of 2009. How does an active-duty detective in the anti-corruption division know her name? Unless…” A dark realization settled over the doctor. “Unless Sarah Quinn wasn't just investigating your syndicates, Vincent. Unless she was digging into something much older. Something you buried.”

Vincent didn’t answer. He reached out and brushed a lock of wet, blond hair away from Sarah’s forehead. Her skin was freezing, her breathing shallow and ragged.

“Finish patching her up,” Vincent commanded, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument. “And when she wakes up, I’m going to find out why a dying cop spoke a ghost's name.”
