Chapter 8 - The True MastermindVincent looked down at Mayor Sterling, whose composure had completely shattered. The powerful politician was now just a trembling, cornered rat.

“You thought you won seventeen years ago,” Vincent said softly, stepping closer until he towered over the Mayor. “You thought burying a teenager in a cheap motel room would keep your secrets safe forever.”
Sterling backed away until his legs hit the edge of his desk. He grabbed the lapels of his suit jacket, his voice cracking with desperation. “Vince... wait. We can make a deal. Name your price! Waterfront property, city contracts, federal immunity—I can give you anything you want!”
“I want what you took from me,” Vincent said coldly. “Peace.”
Before Vincent could raise his weapon, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the doorway behind them.
Vincent and Leo froze.
From the shadows of the private hallway connecting the Mayor’s private sleeping quarters to the office, a slow, clapping sound broke the silence.
Clap. Clap. Clap.
A tall, elegant woman stepped into the light. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit, silver earrings catching the office lights, and a calm, chilling smile on her face.
It was Evelyn Vance—Captain Thomas Vance’s wife, and the chief legal counsel for the Greyhaven Municipal Board.
Sterling’s eyes widened in shock. “Evelyn? What are you—?”
“Shut up, Richard,” Evelyn said smoothly, her voice ice-cold. She raised a small, elegant silver-plated revolver and pointed it not at Vincent, but directly at Mayor Sterling’s chest.
Vincent narrowed his eyes. “Evelyn.”
“Hello, Vincent,” Evelyn said, her smile widening just a fraction. “You always were so wonderfully predictable. You spent seventeen years chasing the politicians, the cops, and the syndicates, never realizing that the person running the city’s entire financial black market was sitting right under your nose.”
Sterling stared at her in absolute horror. “Evelyn... what are you doing? I’m your partner!”
“You were a useful idiot, Richard,” Evelyn corrected coldly. “Just like Elena was seventeen years ago.”
Vincent’s entire body went rigid. The air left his lungs. He took a sharp step forward. “What did you say?”
“You think Richard had the brains to plan a cover-up like that?” Evelyn laughed softly, shaking her head. “Elena didn't just find Richard’s accounts, Vincent. She found my trust funds. She figured out that the city's largest charitable foundations were actually laundering cartel money straight into my offshore accounts. Richard was just the frontman. I was the architect.”

She raised the revolver higher, locking her sights on Vincent’s chest.
“And now, history repeats itself. Detective Quinn gets too close, you come to City Hall to play hero, and you both die in a tragic shootout with a corrupt mayor who committed suicide out of guilt. The media will eat it up.”
