Chapter 10 - The Rain ClearsDawn broke over Greyhaven, washing the gray concrete streets in a warm, golden light. The storm clouds that had battered the city for two days finally broke, drifting away toward the sea and leaving behind a crisp, clean morning air.

Vincent Calder stood on the rooftop of his private office building overlooking the harbor, a lit cigarette between his fingers.
The federal indictments against Mayor Richard Sterling, Evelyn Vance, and Commander Hayes were already blasting across every morning news broadcast in the state. The entire corrupt infrastructure of Greyhaven was crumbling under the weight of the leaked files, and for the first time in seventeen years, the city felt quiet.
Footsteps sounded behind him on the gravel roof.
Vincent didn't turn around, but he knew the steady, slightly uneven gait.
Sarah Quinn walked up beside him. She was wearing a fresh coat, her side heavily bandaged beneath the fabric, moving slowly but with her head held high. She leaned against the concrete railing, looking out over the sparkling water of the harbor.
“The department is offering me a promotion to Lieutenant,” Sarah said quietly, breaking the silence. “Internal Affairs wants me to head the new anti-corruption task force.”
“Are you taking it?” Vincent asked, exhaling a thin stream of gray smoke into the morning air.
“On my own terms,” Sarah replied, turning her head to look at him. “No political interference. No department cover-ups. We clean the city from top to bottom.”
Vincent finally turned his head, meeting her gaze. The cold, unapproachable barrier that had defined his life for nearly two decades was gone, replaced by a quiet, profound understanding.
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, old silver pendant—the one his sister Elena had worn every single day of her life, recovered from the federal evidence lockers an hour ago. He held it out on the palm of his hand.
Sarah looked down at it, then up at Vincent. She didn't say anything, but she reached out and took it, closing her fingers tightly around the cool metal.
“You broke every rule you had left to find the truth, Vincent,” Sarah said softly.
May you like
“Rules are meant to be broken,” Vincent replied, a faint, rare ghost of a smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Especially the ones built on lies.”
As the morning sun crested the horizon, casting a golden glow across the bay, the two former enemies stood side by side—not in war, but in a fragile, hard-earned peace.
