Chapter 2 - The Ghost from the Cold WarWhile Chloe drifted into an exhausted, chemically induced sleep under the care of a trusted nurse I had quietly bribed with a stack of hundred-dollar bills, I slipped out of the VIP suite and took the service elevator down to the sub-basement levels of St. Jude Memorial.

Hospital blueprints are public record if you know which municipal archives to bribe, but the structural modifications made during Julian’s tenure as director required a different set of skills.

I walked past the clinical incinerators and maintenance corridors until I reached an unmarked, biometric-secured security door labeled AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY – SECTOR 7.

Julian thought his private server room was impenetrable. He didn't know that my old unit had designed the very encryption architecture his tech contractors had installed three years ago.

Pulling a small, modified signal-splicing device from the lining of my trench coat, I connected it to the external data port of the security keypad. I tapped a sequence of sixteen override codes—a relic from a classified cyber-warfare protocol used during my active duty years.

Bip.

The heavy steel door hissed open, sliding into the wall with a mechanical sigh.

I stepped inside the cool, humming darkness of the server room. Rows of black server racks blinked with rhythmic blue and green LED lights. This was the beating heart of Julian’s empire: the master database containing encrypted financial offshore accounts, illicit drug trial logs, medical board kickbacks, and, most importantly, the digital blackmail files Julian used to keep every corrupt judge, politician, and surgeon in the city on a short leash.

I plugged my master drive into the central terminal.

A progress bar flashed across the monitor. Downloading files: 12%... 45%... 89%... Complete.

As the data transferred, a secondary window popped up on the screen—a live, encrypted video feed labeled OR-1: MASTER SURGICAL SUITE.

I clicked it out of pure tactical curiosity.

The high-definition camera gave a panoramic view of the operating room where Chloe was scheduled to undergo her C-section in less than forty-eight hours. I zoomed in on the surgical tray, the anesthesia dispensing units, and the back-line supply cabinets.

My breath caught in my throat.

Tucked neatly into the back of a sterile instrument tray was a custom-modified intravenous bag filled with a clear, highly concentrated synthetic paralytic—a lethal compound designed to induce cardiac arrest while keeping the patient fully conscious and paralyzed, completely untraceable in standard post-mortem toxicology unless specifically tested for a rare neuromuscular enzyme.

Julian wasn't just planning to frighten Chloe. He was planning to murder her on the operating table, harvest the baby, and declare her death an unavoidable amniotic fluid embolism.

A cold rage, precise and devastating, settled into my chest.

I ejected my drive, wiped all digital footprints of my access using a self-destruct command script, and slipped out of the server room just as the automated security sweep reset its cycle.

When I returned to the VIP suite, Chloe was awake, staring blankly at the ceiling.

“Mom, where did you go?” she asked, her voice hollow.

I sat down on the edge of her bed, taking her cold, trembling hand in mine. I looked deep into her eyes, letting her see a fraction of the lethal competence that had once kept me alive behind enemy lines.

“Chloe, look at me,” I said softly, yet with absolute command. “Your husband has built a magnificent cage. But tomorrow, we are going to burn it down from the inside out.”
