Chapter 4 - The Operating RoomThe air inside Operating Room 1 was chilled to a precise sixty-four degrees Fahrenheit. The massive overhead surgical lights cast a blinding white glare over the stainless-steel table where Chloe lay, her arms strapped securely to padded armboards.

Dr. Julian Thorne stood at the head of the table, dressed head-to-toe in sterile blue surgical scrubs, his face covered by a surgical mask that couldn't hide the smug, triumphant gleam in his eyes.
To his left stood Dr. Vance, the lead anesthesiologist, checking the digital readout of the IV drip. To his right stood two surgical nurses who had worked with Julian for a decade—loyal, well-paid accomplices who knew better than to ask questions when patients didn't wake up from routine procedures.
“Heart rate is stable at eighty beats per minute, Julian,” Dr. Vance reported, his voice flat and robotic.
“Good,” Julian murmured, his voice muffled by his mask. He looked down at Chloe, whose eyes darted around the room in absolute terror. He leaned down, his face inches from hers, speaking in a whisper meant only for her ears.
“I told you, my love,” Julian whispered softly. “You cannot escape me. In a few moments, your heart will stop, the baby will be mine, and the great Dr. Thorne will mourn his tragic loss before a weeping public.”
Chloe tried to scream, but the pre-operative sedative locked her vocal cords, leaving only a pathetic, choked whimper escaping her lips.
Julian straightened up, raising his scalpel under the blazing lights.
“Begin the primary infusion, Vance,” Julian commanded smoothly. “Let’s bring our child into the world.”
Dr. Vance reached out his gloved hand toward the IV pole, his fingers wrapping around the valve of the lethal paralytic drip that had been smuggled onto the tray.
Suddenly, every monitor in the operating room went violently blank.
BEEP—BEEP—BEEP—
A high-pitched, deafening alarm shrieked through the speakers. The blinding overhead surgical lights flickered wildly before plunging the room into total, pitch-black emergency darkness, save for the eerie green glow of backup battery strips along the floor.
“What the hell is happening?!” Dr. Vance shouted, stumbling backward into a tray of surgical instruments with a metallic crash.
Julian froze, his scalpel hovering in mid-air. His eyes darted toward the wall monitors, which now displayed a single, flashing red warning code across every screen: SYSTEM OVERRIDE – FEDERAL SECURED ACCESS ACTIVE.

“Emergency generators!” Julian barked, his calm, clinical demeanor cracking into sudden panic. “Reset the main console! Now!”
“You can’t reset what’s already been confiscated, Julian,” a calm, icy voice echoed from the doorway.
