Chapter 5 - The Mask Comes OffThe heavy pneumatic doors of Operating Room 1 hissed open.

Flooding the room was not the dim light of emergency backups, but the harsh, blinding glare of tactical flashlights held by federal marshals in full tactical gear. Behind them, stepping through the doorway with unhurried, measured strides, was me.
I had traded my motherly cardigan for a dark tactical jacket. In my hand, I held the master override drive containing every financial crime, illegal drug trial, and medical murder Julian had spent his entire career burying.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Julian roared, ripping off his surgical mask, his face flushed with murderous fury as he pointed a trembling finger at the federal agents. “I am the director of this hospital! You have no jurisdiction here without my authorization! Get these armed thugs out of my surgical suite!”
“Jurisdiction?” A crisp, authoritative voice rang out as a senior federal investigator stepped past the line of marshals, flashing a gold badge directly into Julian’s face. “Dr. Julian Thorne, you are under arrest for federal medical malpractice, conspiracy to commit murder, operating an illicit human experimentation ring, and financial racketeering.”
Julian let out a harsh, derisive laugh, though sweat was already beading on his forehead.
“This is insane! A complete frame-up!” Julian shouted, looking wildly around the room at his frozen staff. “Vance! Tell them! This is a routine delivery!”
Dr. Vance was already backing away toward the corner, his hands raised in surrender, staring at the federal agents with wide, terrified eyes. “Don’t look at me, Julian. I’m cooperating with the Attorney General's office. I have all the audio logs of your orders on my personal server.”
Julian’s face went completely white. The perfect mask cracked down the middle, revealing the snarling, cornered animal underneath.
His eyes snapped away from the agent and landed squarely on me.
For the first time since I had stepped into this hospital, Julian saw past the gray hair and the gentle maternal smile. He saw the cold, dead-eyed glare of an elite military operative who had hunted down warlords and cartel bosses across continents.
“You...” Julian hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous whisper as he realized the full scale of the trap. “You set this up from the very beginning.”
“You threatened my daughter, Julian,” I said, walking slowly toward the operating table until I stood right beneath the flickering emergency lights, towering over him. “You thought power and money made you untouchable. You forgot that a mother protecting her child has nothing left to lose.”

It was a fatal mistake.
