Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Contract

The air in the room grew suffocatingly dense.

I stood frozen, staring at my father. Seven years ago, Ethan had convinced me that my father was secretly embezzling money from my mother’s estate, driving a wedge between us that resulted in me severing all ties with my family. I had spent nearly a decade believing my father was a corrupt, heartless man.

"What is he doing here?" Ethan stammered, backing up until his spine hit the mahogany door frame. "Richard, don't listen to him! He’s senile! He’s been out of the industry for years!"

"Shut up, Ethan," Richard Stone growled, his confidence visibly wavering for the first time. He turned to my father. "Arthur... what is this?"

"This," my father said, pulling a leather-bound journal from his jacket, "is the original foundational patent for the structural restoration telemetry system. The base system that Claire used to build Aegis-9."

My father turned to me, his eyes filled with a painful mixture of guilt and love. "Claire... I never embezzled your mother’s money. Four years ago, when Ethan came to visit me in secret, he threatened to leak falsified documents that would ruin your mother’s legacy unless I gave him access to our family trust’s technical patents. When I refused, he manipulated you into cutting me off so I couldn't tell you the truth."

"No... no, that's not true! She's lying! They're all lying!" Ethan screamed, his face turning bright red.

"I have the audio recordings, Ethan," Adrian said coldly, leaning back in his leather chair. "Your former chief technology officer handed over three years of internal communications this morning in exchange for full immunity from federal prosecutors. You didn't just steal Claire's code. You committed corporate fraud, grand larceny, and blackmail."

Richard Stone stared at Ethan as if he were a poisonous snake. "You idiot," Richard spat, realizing that his own firm's reputation was now linked to a massive corporate crime. "You told me the IP was clean! You told me you had her completely under control!"

"Richard, please! You have to help me!" Ethan pleaded, grabbing Stone’s arm. "We can still fix this! We can silence them!"

"Get your hands off me!" Richard shoved Ethan away with such force that Ethan stumbled to the floor. "The deal is dead. My daughter is cutting all ties with you as of this second. If you ever contact Vanessa again, I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."

Richard Stone turned on his heel and stormed out of the office, leaving Ethan lying on the floor, panting frantically like a trapped animal.

Ethan looked up at me from the ground, his eyes wide with desperation. "Claire... please... baby, listen to me," he sobbed, scrambling to his knees. "I did it for us! I was under so much pressure! The investors... they forced me to move fast! I made mistakes, but I loved you! I still love you! We can fix this together!"

I looked down at the man I had spent four years loving, the man I was supposed to marry. The handsome, charming visionary was gone. All that was left was a hollow, pathetic thief.

"Get out," I said softly.

"Claire, please—"

"GET OUT!" I roared.

Adrian motioned to his security team. Two massive guards grabbed Ethan by his armpits, dragging him out of the office as he screamed my name, his desperate cries echoing down the marble hallway until the double doors slammed shut.

Silence descended upon the room once more.

I stood there, shaking. My father took a hesitant step toward me. "Claire... I am so sorry. I should have fought harder to reach you. I should never have let him push me away."

Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes. "Dad..."

He wrapped his arms around me, holding me tightly for the first time in seven years. I wept into his shoulder, feeling years of manipulation, guilt, and pain melting away.

After a long moment, my father pulled back, drying his eyes. "There’s something else you need to know, Claire. Something about Sheikh Adrian."

I wiped my face and looked over at Adrian, who was standing by the window, staring out at the city with an expression that was totally unreadable.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Adrian didn't just find out about Ethan’s fraud three days ago," my father revealed softly. "He has been tracking Ethan’s company for two years. But not because of the tech."

I turned to Adrian, a strange sensation rising in my chest. "Adrian... what is my father talking about?"

Adrian slowly turned around. The enigmatic, confident billionaire who had commanded the ballroom last night suddenly looked... uncertain.

"Your family's restoration firm," Adrian said quietly, walking toward us. "It wasn't just a business, Claire. Fifty years ago, your grandfather restored an ancient palace in Kyoto. A palace that belonged to my late grandmother."

My breath hitched.

"Inside the foundation of that palace," Adrian continued, "your grandfather hid something. A legal codicil to the Rashid family estate. A document that was stolen three weeks ago from my family’s vault in Zurich."

Adrian stopped right in front of me, his gaze intensity burning into mine.

"The person who bought that stolen document on the black market... was Ethan Blake's real secret backer. And that person is currently sitting in this city, waiting to destroy both of our families."
