Chapter 6 - The Shattered Illusion

The red emergency lights cast long, sinister shadows across the workshop. Evelyn’s thumb hovered dangerously over the red detonator switch on the small black remote.

"Don't do it, Evelyn!" my father groaned from the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder. "There’s no escape for you! The police are outside!"

"Let them come!" Evelyn shrieked, her aristocratic facade completely crumbling. "I spent six years building this deal! I bought off Ethan, I bought off the city inspectors, I bought off half your father's legal team! I will NOT walk away with nothing!"

Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't even raise his gun. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step toward her.

"Press it," Adrian said softly.

Evelyn froze, her eyes widening. "What?"

"Press the button, Evelyn," Adrian repeated, his voice dangerously quiet. "You think you placed thermite charges around this building two hours ago. What you don't know is that my security team swept this entire block at four o'clock this morning. Your explosives were disarmed and removed three hours before you even stepped foot in Brooklyn."

Evelyn’s face drained of what little color it had left. "You're... you're lying!"

In a frenzy of panic, she slammed her thumb down on the red button.

Nothing happened.

She pressed it again. And again. And again. The silence in the room was deafening.

"Your entire network has failed, Evelyn," Adrian said, nodding toward the front doors.

The heavy wooden doors burst open once more, but this time, it wasn't mercenaries. A squad of federal agents clad in FBI tactical gear swarmed into the room, their weapon lights blindingly bright.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPON! GET ON THE GROUND!"

Evelyn dropped the useless remote, her knees buckling as she fell to the floor. Federal agents swarmed over her, pinning her arms behind her back and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

As they dragged her out of the workshop, she looked at me with pure venom. "You think you won, Claire? You're just a tool for him! Ask him why he really came to New York! Ask him about the third protocol!"

She was dragged out into the rain, her screams dying out into the night.

Paramedics rushed into the room, tending to my father’s shoulder wound. I knelt beside him, holding his hand as they patched him up. "You're going to be okay, Dad. It's over."

"I know, sweetheart," my father whispered, tears in his eyes. "I'm so sorry for everything."

Once my father was safely loaded into an ambulance bound for the hospital, I turned to face Adrian.

The workshop was quiet now, save for the hum of the red emergency lights. Adrian stood near the workbench, holding the brass box.

"What did she mean, Adrian?" I asked, walking over to him. "What was she talking about when she said 'the third protocol'?"

May you like

Adrian closed the brass chest and turned to face me. For the first time since I had met him, he looked truly exhausted.

"Sit down, Claire," he said gently. "There is one final thing I need to show you."
