Chapter 4 - The Shadow Investor

The revelation hung in the air like heavy smoke.

"A secret backer?" I repeated, looking between my father and Adrian. "Ethan was just a struggling tech founder when I met him. He barely had enough money to pay rent!"

"Ethan was a frontman, Claire," Adrian explained, walking over to his desk and tapping the interface. A hologram projected above the marble table, displaying a labyrinthine network of shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands, Delaware, and Liechtenstein. "Four years ago, Ethan’s company received an anonymous influx of twenty million dollars in seed capital. The source was routed through three different Swiss banks."

"Who owns the shell company?" I asked, my heart pacing faster.

"A syndicate known as Vanguard Legacy," my father answered grimly. "And the woman who runs it is someone you know very well."

My father pulled a photograph from his pocket and laid it on the desk.

I stared down at the image. The woman in the photo was in her late fifties, wearing a sharp white power suit, with cold gray eyes and dark hair pulled into a severe bun.

"Evelyn Vance," I whispered, the blood turning to ice in my veins. "My stepmother."

The woman who had married my father shortly after my mother passed away—the woman who had mysteriously vanished from our lives six years ago after draining my mother’s private trust fund.

"She didn't vanish, Claire," my father said softly, his voice trembling with anger. "She took that money, partnered with international black-market brokers, and built Vanguard Legacy. She used Ethan to get close to you because she knew you held the secondary access keys to your grandfather’s digital vault."

Everything was crashing together in a horrifying picture. Ethan had never loved me. Vanessa Stone was just a distraction. The entire four-year relationship had been a cold, calculated setup orchestrated by my stepmother to steal my grandfather's historical vault keys.

"They brought you to that ball last night expecting you to break," Adrian added. "Ethan was instructed to humiliate you so severely that you would pack your things and leave the country, abandoning your grandfather's old physical workshop in Brooklyn. Once you were gone, Evelyn’s team planned to raid the building."

"My workshop..." I gasped. "It’s full of my grandfather's original restoration blue-prints and physical logbooks!"

"We need to go. Now," Adrian commanded, snapping his fingers at his security team.

Ten minutes later, we were in the back of Adrian’s armored Maybach, speeding through the rainy streets of Manhattan toward the industrial waterfront of Brooklyn. Two black SUVs carrying Adrian’s private security detail followed closely behind us.

"What is in that codicil, Adrian?" I asked as the city buildings blurred past the rain-slicked window. "Why would my stepmother go to such lengths for a fifty-year-old document?"

Adrian looked at me, his expression grave. "My grandmother was not just royalty, Claire. She was the sole owner of a private trust that holds the land rights to one of the largest rare-earth mineral deposits in the Middle East. The codicil proves that the mineral rights belong to an independent conservation trust, not the corporation Evelyn Vance represents."

"If Evelyn gets that document," my father added from the front passenger seat, "she can forge the transfer papers and strip-mine an entire ecological biosphere worth over fifty billion dollars."

Suddenly, the driver slammed on the brakes.

The Maybach skidded across the wet asphalt as a massive black garbage truck pulled out from an intersection, blocking the road ahead. Before our driver could reverse, a heavy pickup truck rammed into the rear of our vehicle with a sickening crunch of metal.

"Ambush!" the driver shouted, pulling his firearm.

Around us, four unmarked black vans screeched to a halt, blocking the side streets. Men dressed in tactical gear and holding automatic weapons poured out of the vehicles.

"Stay down!" Adrian yelled, throwing his body over mine to cover me as the heavy armored glass of the Maybach rattled under a hail of suppressed gunfire.

Outside, Adrian’s security guards leaped from their SUVs, returning fire. The alley echoed with the deafening sound of gunshots, shattering glass, and screaming engines.

Through the darkened, bullet-pitted window, I saw a figure step out from the passenger side of the garbage truck.

It was Ethan.

He held a crowbar in his hand, his eyes wild, unhinged, and bloodshot. He looked completely insane.

"CLAIRE!" Ethan screamed above the roar of gunfire, marching toward our armored vehicle. "GIVE ME THE KEYS! GIVE ME THE KEYS AND EVELYN WILL LET YOU LIVE!"

"He’s lost his mind," I gasped, clutching Adrian’s jacket.

"He's desperate," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm despite the chaotic firefight raging around us. He reached under his seat and pulled out a sleek, compact sidearm, racking the slide with a practiced efficiency. "Stay in the car, Claire. No matter what happens."

"Adrian, no!" I pleaded.

Before I could stop him, Adrian kicked open the Maybach’s heavy door, using it as a shield as he fired three precise shots into the tires of the truck blocking our path.

Ethan lunged at Adrian with the crowbar, screaming like a lunatic. "YOU RUINED MY LIFE!"

Adrian dodged the wild swing effortlessly, caught Ethan’s wrist, twisted it back with a sharp, sickening CRACK, and drove a devastating knee straight into Ethan’s ribs.

Ethan collapsed onto the wet pavement, weeping in agony as his arm hung at an unnatural angle.

"You ruined your own life, Blake," Adrian said coldly, standing over him.

Suddenly, a loud siren blared through the industrial district. Police cruisers, their red and blue lights flashing through the heavy rain, came speeding around the corner.

The tactical mercenaries immediately threw down smoke grenades, creating a blinding wall of white fog, and scattered into the side alleys.

When the smoke cleared, Ethan was lying on the ground, groaning in pain, surrounded by armed police officers with their weapons drawn.

Adrian stepped back into the Maybach, his suit barely rumpled. He turned to me, checking my face for any injuries. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," I breathed, my heart pounding violently. "But look..."

May you like

I pointed toward the alleyway. Standing in the shadows under an umbrella, watching the police arrest Ethan, was Evelyn Vance. She caught my eye, offered a cold, terrifying smile, and tapped her wristwatch before vanishing into the darkness.

She wasn't trying to stop us. She was giving us a deadline.
