Chapter 2 - The House of Vipers

Within hours, the boy was brought into the sprawling, gothic gates of the Sterling Estate. The grand mansion, built on high cliffs overlooking the crashing tides of Blackwood Bay, felt more like a golden cage than a sanctuary.

Clara spent the entire night bathing the boy herself. As the soot washed away under warm water, the stark truth emerged. Beneath the grime was a young boy who bore an unmistakable, terrifying resemblance to the Sterling lineage—down to a distinctive, crescent-shaped birthmark on his right shoulder blade.

Lily sat on the edge of the velvet bench in the bathroom, clutching her knees. "Is he really my big brother?" she asked softly. "The one from the photographs in the locked room?"

Clara dried Julian’s hair with a soft towel, her eyes bright with tears. "Yes, darling. This is Julian. Seven years ago, someone stole him from us. But a miracle brought him back to you today."

Julian looked down at his clean clothes—a cashmere sweater and soft trousers. He looked terrified to touch anything, as if the luxury around him would shatter if he breathed too loudly. "The bad men... they told me my name was Number Nine," Julian mumbled, his chin trembling. "They said if I ever told anyone who I was, they would burn the house with the brick wall down."

Clara’s blood ran cold. "What bad men, Julian?"

Before he could answer, the heavy double doors of the master bedroom burst open.

In walked Eleanor Sterling, the grand matriarch of the family and Victor’s formidable mother, flanked by Julian’s step-uncle, Damon. Eleanor adjusted her pearl necklace, her eyes scanning the boy with icy disdain.

"So this is the urchin you dragged out of the gutter, Clara?" Eleanor sneered. "You bring a dirty street beggar into this house and claim he’s the lost heir? Do you have any idea what this spectacle will do to our stock price tomorrow morning?"

"He has the birthmark, Eleanor!" Clara stood up defensively. "He remembers his name! He recognized me!"

Damon chuckled sinisterly, leaning against the doorframe. "Birthmarks can be tattooed, dear sister-in-law. And any street kid in this city knows what the lost Sterling heir looks like—his picture was on every billboard for three years. It’s an easy scam."

"He is NOT a scam!" Clara yelled.

"We will let the science decide," Eleanor said sharply. "Dr. Evans is on his way down from the private clinic. We are taking a full DNA sample tonight. If he is Julian, he stays under heavy guard. If he is an impostor..." Eleanor stepped closer, her shadow engulfing the small boy. "...he will spend the rest of his short life in a federal penitentiary for attempted extortion."

That night, as the mansion grew quiet, Julian lay in a vast, dark bed. He couldn't sleep. The softness of the mattress felt wrong compared to the hard pavement.

Suddenly, the handle of his bedroom door turned silently. A shadowed figure slipped into the room, holding a syringe filled with a clear liquid.

HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Julian held his breath as the figure bent over his bed. Just as the needle hovered inches from his neck, a tiny hand grabbed the intruder's wrist! It was Lily, holding a heavy marble paperweight. "Get away from my brother!" she screamed, as the intruder lunged for her throat!
