Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

THWIP!
A silent shot echoed through the ballroom, shattering a champagne fountain just inches from Julian!
"Get down!" Detective Vance screamed, pulling Clara, Julian, and Lily behind the concrete bar as glass exploded everywhere!
Panic erupted in the ballroom as high-society guests shrieked and trampled over each other to reach the exits. Vance pulled his service weapon and returned fire toward the VIP balcony, but the shooter vanished into the shadows of the hotel's upper floors.
"We need to move now!" Vance shouted, escorting Clara and the kids through the kitchen doors and out into an armored police van waiting in the alley.
They were rushed to a federal safehouse—a secluded cabin deep in the pine forests of the mountains, guarded by heavily armed federal marshals.
For three days, the safehouse was quiet. Julian began to smile again, playing board games with Lily while Clara prepared warm meals. For the first time in seven years, Clara felt a sliver of peace.
On the fourth night, a blizzard raged outside, cutting off all phone lines and power to the cabin.
Clara sat by the fireplace, watching Julian sleep on the couch. Detective Vance sat across from her, cleaning his gun by the firelight.
"Thank you, Marcus," Clara said softly. "Without you, we would all be dead."
Vance stopped cleaning his gun. He looked up at Clara, his face illuminated by the flickering orange flames of the hearth.
"You know, Clara..." Vance murmured, his voice hauntingly calm. "Victor was a greedy bastard, but he was never the mastermind. He was just a small-time coward who owed fifty million dollars to bad people."
Clara frowned, a cold knot forming in her stomach. "What do you mean?"
"Seven years ago, someone offered Victor a way out," Vance continued, standing up slowly. "They offered to buy the boy, pay off Victor's debts, and make Victor the CEO of Sterling Global... on one condition. That the boy would be raised in secrecy until the biological mother’s estate matured."
Clara’s heart stopped. "Biological mother? Damon said the surrogate was an anonymous woman..."
"Damon lied," Vance said, taking a step toward her. "Julian’s biological mother was my late sister, Sarah."
Clara gasped, backing away against the wall. "Sarah? Victor’s sister? But... that means..."

"That means Julian isn't just an heir to Sterling Global," Vance smiled sinisterly, pulling his weapon and aiming it directly at Clara's forehead. "He is the sole heir to the Vance-Sterling trust fund—worth 4.2 billion dollars. And as his legal uncle, if both you and Victor die... I become the sole guardian of the trust."
HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Clara stared into the barrel of Vance's gun. The brave detective who had saved them was the ultimate villain! "It was you..." Clara whispered in shock. "You were the one who kidnapped him seven years ago!" Vance pulled back the hammer: "And tonight, the story finally ends."
