Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Orphanage

A silence so profound fell over the massive ballroom that you could hear a pin drop.
Clara felt as if the air had been sucked out of her lungs. "What... what did you say?" she gasped, her hands trembling violently.
Damon stepped down from the podium, walking toward Clara like a predator stalking its prey. "Eight years ago, Clara, you had a stillbirth at St. Jude’s Private Hospital. You were unconscious for two days. Victor couldn't bear to break your heart... so he bought a newborn baby from a secret surrogate mother and placed him in your arms when you woke up."
Damon leaned in close, his voice picked up by the hot mics. "Julian is Victor’s son with another woman. You've been raising a bastard child this entire time, Clara. You are nothing to him. You have no legal claim to this boy!"
The room spun. Clara looked down at Julian. The little boy was staring up at her, tears spilling down his soot-stained cheeks. "Mom? Is... is that true? Are you not my real mommy?"
Clara dropped to her knees right there on the crimson carpet of the gala. She reached out and wrapped her arms around the small, trembling boy, pulling him close to her heart.
"Listen to me, Julian," Clara sobbed passionately, ignoring the hundreds of flashing cameras and gasping socialites. "I carried you in my heart. I rocked you to sleep every night. I washed the soot from your face. Biology doesn't make a mother—LOVE DOES. You are MY SON!"
The raw emotional force of Clara’s declaration sent a wave of whispers through the crowd. Many in the audience began to tear up.
Suddenly, sirens blared outside the venue. Detective Vance marched into the ballroom backed by twenty armed state troopers.
"Victor Sterling, Damon Sterling, and Eleanor Sterling!" Vance announced, holding up an arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, human trafficking, tax evasion, and attempted murder!"
Victor’s eyes darted around the room like a trapped animal. He glanced at his security detail, but they lowered their weapons—the state troopers had them completely outgunned.

As officers handcuffed Victor, he looked back at Clara and Julian. "You think you've won, Clara?" Victor laughed manically. "You have no idea who really controls this city! You’ll never make it to the trial!"
HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: As Victor was led away in handcuffs, a shadowy figure standing in the VIP balcony above raised a silenced pistol, aiming directly at little Julian's chest!
