Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

"Mmmph!" Lily struggled, but the grip on her mouth was ironclad. She was lifted quietly into the shadowy alcove behind the study library.
"Shh! Lily, it’s me!" a voice whispered.
Lily stopped kicking and looked up. It wasn't one of the security guards—it was Detective Marcus Vance! He slowly released his grip, putting his finger to his lips.
"Detective?" Lily gasped, clutching the real DNA document to her chest. "Why are you hiding?"
"Because this house is surrounded by wolves, kiddo," Vance said softly, taking the paper from her hands. His eyes narrowed as he read the 99.99% match. "I knew it. They bought off Dr. Evans. Your father and grandmother are trying to erase this boy."
"Why would Daddy want to throw away his own son?" Lily wept.
Vance looked at the young girl with a mixture of pity and urgency. "Because seven years ago, when Julian vanished, your father collected a fifty-million-dollar insurance payout and used it to save Sterling Global from bankruptcy. If Julian is proven to be alive today, the insurance company will reclaim every penny, the bank will seize the company, and your father will go to prison for fraud."
Inside the grand hallway, guards were dragging Julian toward the front doors while Clara fought them hysterically.
"Release him!" a loud, commanding voice echoed across the foyer.
Everyone froze. Detective Vance walked out into the open, holding his badge in one hand and the real DNA report in the other.
"Dr. Evans, you are under arrest for falsifying medical records and evidence tampering," Vance declared, signaling two city police officers standing at the entrance. "And as for you, Mr. Sterling... the state lab just confirmed the original test. Julian is your biological son."
Victor’s coffee cup shattered on the marble floor. Eleanor stood frozen, her eyes wide with fury.
Clara ran forward, pulling Julian into her arms and holding him tight. "My baby... my baby!"
Victor stepped forward, his eyes cold and devoid of life. He looked at Detective Vance, then at Clara and Julian. "Fine," Victor said softly, a terrifyingly calm smile spreading across his face. "He stays. We will welcome our lost prince back home."
That night, Clara locked herself and both children inside the master bedroom, pushing heavy furniture against the doors. She knew they weren't safe.
As the storm raged outside, Lily pulled an old, leather-bound diary out from under her mattress. "Mom... I found this in the attic yesterday while you were at the alley. It belonged to Aunt Sarah... Dad’s sister who died seven years ago."
Clara took the diary with trembling hands. She flipped to the last page, written on the exact night Julian was kidnapped seven years ago.

The handwriting was frantic, stained with tear marks: > "Victor didn't just lose Julian. He traded him. He gave my nephew to the Syndicate in exchange for the capital to buy the company. God forgive us all."
HOOK / CLIFFHANGER: Clara stared at the entry in absolute horror. Suddenly, the lights in the entire mansion cut out. The heavy iron door handles began to rattle violently from the outside, followed by the sound of a chainsaw tearing through the wooden door!
