Chapter 7 - Smoke and MirrorsThe labyrinthine corridors of the Gladwyne estate echoed with the sound of shattered glass and heavy gunfire. Smoke billowed from the eastern wing, smelling of burning electronics and industrial-grade thermite.

"This way!" Dominic ordered, pulling Nora tightly behind him as he navigated the pitch-black hallway using the faint red glow of the emergency beacons.

Lia buried her face in Dominic’s shoulder, crying softly. Nora kept her hand firmly locked in the crook of Dominic’s elbow, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She had spent her entire life dodging the rough edges of Philadelphia, but this was a war zone.

Suddenly, a heavy oak door at the end of the corridor blasted inward in a cloud of splinters and white smoke. Two men in tactical gear, their faces concealed behind black balaclavas and night-vision goggles, stepped through the haze, automatic rifles raised.

Dominic shoved Nora and Lia behind a heavy marble pillar with lightning speed. He drew a custom-engraved Sig Sauer pistol from his holster with his right hand, firing twice with lethal, mechanical precision. Both tactical operatives dropped instantly, their weapons clattering against the polished hardwood floor.

"Stay down!" Dominic snarled, checking the slide of his gun.

"Dom!" Matteo’s voice crackled over the tactical comms clipped to Dominic’s collar. "They hit the armory! They’ve got heavy explosives! You need to get the girl out through the subterranean drainage tunnel now!"

"Negative," Dominic barked back. "If they have explosives, they’re going to bring the whole estate down on top of us. We push for the motor pool."

Nora looked at Dominic, her eyes wide with adrenaline and fear, but completely devoid of cowardice. "Give me a gun."

Dominic stared at her as if she had lost her mind. "Are you insane?"

"I grew up in the worst precinct in South Philly, Mr. Moretti," Nora snapped, her voice cutting through the distant sound of explosions. "I know how to shoot, and I'm not going to sit here and wait to be a hostage. Give me the damn gun!"

For a second, Dominic considered it. Then, with a curt nod, he pulled a compact Glock from his ankle holster and pressed it into her trembling hand, wrapping her fingers around the grip.

"Aim for the chest," Dominic instructed fiercely. "Do not hesitate."

They broke cover, sprinting through the smoke toward the grand staircase that led down to the underground garage. As they rounded the corner, a figure stepped out from the shadows of the portrait gallery, blocking their path.

It was Leo Santoro himself.

He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He wore an expensive tailored Italian suit, holding a silver detonator in one hand and a gold-plated revolver pointed straight at Nora’s head in the other.

"Well, well, well," Leo smiled, his eyes glinting with psychotic glee. "The Devil of Broad Street, cornered in his own nursery. Drop the gun, Dominic. Or the waitress loses her brains right here on the carpet."
