Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

We stepped out onto the grand wooden landing overlooking the foyer just as the front doors were kicked wide open. The crisp night air rushed in, carrying the scent of wet asphalt and impending justice.
Three State Troopers had Julian pinned against the mahogany entryway console, his expensive designer sweater bunched up around his neck, his face pale with shock. Chloe was screaming hysterically near the living room archway, waving her diamond-encrusted hands in the air as she tried to block a female trooper from entering.
"This is an outrage! We are the legal caretakers of this property!" Chloe shrieked, her voice losing its polished, condescending edge, reverting to raw, feral panic. "Show us a warrant! You can’t just break into our home! Julian, do something! Tell them who you are!"
Julian strained against the troopers, his eyes darting wildly across the room until they locked onto the grand staircase. And then, he saw us.
He saw me standing tall and unblinking at the top of the steps. And right beside me, walking unassisted for the first time in months without her coat, was our mother—fragile, bruised, but standing upright with her head held high.
Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. His jaw dropped, and the arrogant, smug expression he had worn all afternoon dissolved into a look of sheer, unadulterated horror.
"M-Mom..." Julian stammered, his voice cracking. "What... what are you doing? Tell them! Tell these officers that we take care of you! Tell them you're just confused! Elena is lying to you—she's trying to steal your estate!"
"Shut your mouth, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the chaos of the foyer like a razor blade. I descended the stairs slowly, each step heavy and deliberate, like the tolling of a doom bell.
The senior trooper leading the raid—a tall, weathered captain with silver temples—stepped toward me, flashing a respectful nod. "Assistant Attorney General Vance. The lower level is secured. Suspects Julian Vance and Chloe Sterling are restrained pending formal arrest."
"Thank you, Captain," I replied clearly, my eyes fixed entirely on my brother.
Chloe lunged forward, trying to claw her way past the female trooper. "Elena! You bitch! You manipulative little—she has dementia! She doesn't know what she's saying! We have the power of attorney! We have the court papers!"
"You have forged documents, falsified medical proxy clearances, and a paper trail of financial transactions that lead straight to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands," I countered, stopping just two feet away from Chloe. I leaned in close, speaking in a low, venomous whisper. "Did you really think I wouldn't audit the entire estate the moment I found a single discrepancy in her medical records? Did you think you could play god with my mother's life?"
Julian finally stopped struggling, his knees buckling slightly as reality set in. "Elena... please. We’re family. We can talk about this. We can split the portfolio—just drop the charges. Don't ruin us over an old woman who won't even remember this tomorrow!"

Before I could deliver the crushing blow, Clara's voice rang out from the top of the stairs, clear, resonant, and carrying the weight of eighty-eight years of wisdom and pain.
"I remember everything, Julian," she said, her voice echoing in the silent foyer. "And for the first time in three years, I am not afraid anymore."
