Chapter 5 - The Arraignment Trap

The following morning, the sun broke through the gray clouds, casting a sharp, unforgiving light over the courthouse steps downtown.

Media vans lined the street, their satellite dishes pointed toward the grand limestone entrance like hungry mechanical beasts. Word of Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance leading a midnight raid against her own brother—a prominent local real estate mogul accused of elder abuse and municipal corruption—had detonated across every major news outlet in the state.

Julian and Chloe were scheduled for their initial arraignment at 9:00 AM in the central district courtroom.

I walked into the prosecution gallery wearing a crisp charcoal suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase packed with the forensic ledger, the audio tape, the timestamped medical photographs, and the vault recovery logs.

Moments later, the heavy oak side doors opened, and Julian and Chloe were led in by court bailiffs. They were dressed in orange detention jumpsuits, their hair unkempt, their arrogant facades completely obliterated by the harsh reality of their midnight arrest.

Julian’s eyes scanned the courtroom frantically until they landed on me sitting at the state counsel table. His face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. He strained against his restraints, muttering threats under his breath as the bailiffs forced him down into the defense seat beside a jittery, sweating public defender.

The Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance—a strict, no-nonsense magistrate known for her zero-tolerance policy on white-collar crime—hammered her gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

"All rise for the Court. This is Docket Number CR-2026-8891, The State versus Julian Vance and Chloe Sterling," Judge Vance announced, adjusting her glasses as she scanned the towering stack of indictments. "The charges include felony elder abuse, physical assault, financial extortion, forgery of legal instruments, wire fraud, and municipal racketeering."

Julian’s defense attorney scrambled to his feet, papers trembling in his hands. "Your Honor, we enter a plea of not guilty to all charges. Furthermore, we move for immediate dismissal based on jurisdictional overreach and unlawful search and seizure of private residential property—"

"Save your breath, Counselor," I interrupted, standing up smoothly and buttoning my jacket. I stepped forward into the well of the court, laying the red velvet box and the physical ledger squarely on the evidence podium.

"The State objects to the motion for dismissal," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the vaulted chamber. "The search of the residential property was executed under a valid emergency ex parte protective order authorized by Judge Thorne, following immediate visual and photographic confirmation of life-threatening physical abuse and ongoing kidnapping."

I turned my gaze directly toward Julian, who was trembling with rage in the prisoner’s dock.

"Furthermore, Your Honor," I continued, sliding the physical ledger and the transcript of our father’s tape across the clerk's desk, "what the defense attempts to frame as a 'private residential dispute' is, in reality, a multi-million-dollar criminal enterprise designed to systematically torture, isolate, and silence an elderly citizen while laundering municipal bribe money through stolen estate assets."

A collective murmur rippled through the packed courtroom gallery. Reporters furiously tapped away on their laptops, flashing camera shutters clicking like a swarm of mechanical crickets.

Julian leaped to his feet, ignoring his lawyer’s frantic tugs on his jumpsuit sleeve. "She’s lying! She’s using her power in the AG’s office to frame us! She wants the whole estate for herself! Look at her—she’s a corrupt prosecutor abusing the justice system!"

Judge Vance hammered her gavel three times, the sound cracking like thunder through the room.

"Silence, Mr. Vance! One more outburst and you will be held in direct contempt of court, and your microphone will be permanently muted!" Judge Vance glared down from the bench, her eyes freezing Julian in his tracks.

"Given the severity of the charges, the overwhelming physical evidence presented by the Assistant Attorney General, and the clear flight risk demonstrated by offshore financial accounts linked to the defendants," Judge Vance declared, picking up her signature pen, "bail is denied. Both defendants will be remanded to the state penitentiary pending trial without the possibility of release."

Julian slumped back into his chair, his hands shaking as the bailiffs grabbed his shoulders to escort him back to holding.

As he was dragged past the prosecution table, he locked eyes with me one last time, whispering a curse so full of hatred it seemed to drop the temperature in the room by ten degrees.

"You think you’ve won," Julian hissed through clenched teeth. "You don't even know what Chloe and I set in motion before you walked through that front door. The house is already gone, Elena. Everything is already gone."
