Chapter 7 - The Counter-Strike

The threat was instantaneous, brutal, and entirely real. The syndicate Julian had entangled himself with wasn't going to wait for the judicial system to grind its slow wheels; they were cutting their losses and striking directly at our weak points.

I didn't panic. Panic was a luxury reserved for people who didn't carry a state badge and a federal warrant book.

Instead, I picked up my secure satellite phone and dialed a direct three-digit extension that bypassed civilian dispatch entirely.

"Federal Tactical Operations Command. This is Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance. I am invoking emergency counter-terrorism and organized crime jurisdiction under Section 48-B."

"Go ahead, Counselor. We copy," a crisp, disciplined military voice responded instantly.

"I need an immediate geolocational trace on an incoming SMS ping originating from tower grid sector seven near the industrial docklands. Furthermore, I require a tactical hostage rescue unit deployed to that coordinate matrix within fifteen minutes."

"Understood. Signal triangulation initiated... Target vector locked. Deploying Alpha Team now. What are your orders regarding the suspects at the location?"

"Take them alive if possible," I replied coldly, grabbing my service weapon and locking my briefcase. "Secure the hostage, neutralize any resistance, and leave the leadership to me."

I drove my unmarked state vehicle through the darkened streets of the city, ignoring traffic signals as my tires screamed around slick corners. The industrial docklands were a labyrinth of rusted shipping containers, decaying warehouses, and flickering halogen security lights standing guard over forgotten cargo.

As I pulled my car into the shadows behind a towering stack of green steel containers, I saw the dim amber glow leaking from the cracked windows of Warehouse 14.

Two armed thugs in black tactical vests stood smoking near a rusted side door, their automatic rifles slung casually over their shoulders. They thought they were holding all the cards. They thought a lone prosecutor would come crawling to them begging for a deal.

They didn't hear the silent approach of the black federal transport vans rolling up behind them with their headlights completely killed.

Before the two guards could even reach for their weapons, the shadows erupted. Flash-bang grenades detonated with blinding, ear-splitting fury inside the warehouse courtyard, followed instantly by the thunderous boots of tactical operators swarming the perimeter.

"Federal Agents! Down on the ground! Do it now!"

Shouts, heavy thuds, and the unmistakable sound of zip-ties snapping into place filled the humid night air. I drew my service pistol, pushed open the side door, and stepped into the smoke-filled interior of the warehouse.

Tied to a wooden chair in the center of the room was the private nurse, terrified but unharmed. Standing over her, desperately reaching for a discarded shotgun on a nearby crate, was a heavily tattooed enforcer trying to clear his vision from the flash-bang.

I stepped forward, raised my weapon, and planted the barrel squarely against the side of a rusted steel drum inches from his head.

"Don't even think about it," I said, my voice cutting through the ringing in his ears like a gunshot.

The enforcer froze, slowly raising his empty hands into the air as three federal operators rushed past me, pinning him face-first to the concrete floor and securing him in industrial restraints.

I holstered my weapon, walked over to the nurse, and swiftly cut her bonds with my pocket knife. "You're safe now. Medic team is right outside."

As she was escorted out to safety, I noticed a glowing laptop sitting open on a desk in the corner of the workspace. The screen displayed a live financial wire transfer portal connected directly to the predatory private equity firm holding the fraudulent mortgage on my mother’s house.

The transfer was set to execute automatically at midnight, wiping out the remaining escrow funds and transferring the deed to the syndicate.

I smiled grimly, pulled a secure encrypted flash drive from my pocket, plugged it directly into the terminal, and bypassed their firewall with a pre-coded override script supplied by the AG’s cyber division.

Instead of transferring funds to the syndicate, the script locked their entire network, froze their offshore accounts, and routed every single dollar of illegally laundered capital straight back into the state victim restitution fund—and, most importantly, completely cleared the reverse mortgage on my mother’s estate, restoring the original, unencumbered land deed back to Clara Vance.

Transfer complete. Secure vault locked.

Julian’s grand syndicate had just funded the very restoration of the empire they tried to steal.
