Chapter 4 - A Game of LeverageDerek Walsh stood in the doorway of the women's restroom, holding Claire by the collar of her blouse. Claire’s face was pale, a thin scratch bleeding slowly down her cheek where she had hit the sink.

As Adrian stepped into the hallway, his eyes locked onto Derek and the terrified woman in his grip.

For a fraction of a second, the cold mask of the city’s most feared mafia boss slipped. A dark, lethal fury flashed in his eyes—a look so terrifying that even Derek instinctively stepped back half a step.

"Let her go, Derek," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

"I don't think so," Derek sneered, pressing the barrel of a small chrome pistol against Claire’s temple. "You think you own Ravenport, Adrian. You think you can crush everyone under your boot. But my uncle Victor wants a talk. And you're going to listen."

"Victor Hawthorne is a coward who hides behind nephews he treats as disposable," Adrian replied, taking a slow step forward. "Just like you, Derek. Do you honestly think Victor cares if you walk out of here alive?"

Derek’s hand trembled slightly. "Shut up! Don't listen to him, Claire. Your boss doesn't care about you. You're just a filing clerk to him!"

Claire, despite the gun pressed to her head and the blood on her cheek, looked up at Adrian. Her eyes weren't filled with fear anymore. They held a strange, complicated sorrow.

"Adrian," she whispered softly. "Don't do this. He has the financial ledgers. He copied them from my desk last week."

Adrian stopped. He looked at Claire, then back at Derek.

"Ledgers?" Adrian asked quietly.

Derek grinned triumphantly. "That's right, Vale. Every offshore account, every bribe paid to the city council, every dirty dollar your empire is built on. It's all backed up on a flash drive in my pocket. If you kill me, or if I don't send a signal to my uncle in the next ten minutes, those files go straight to federal prosecutors and the press."

Owen stepped into the hallway behind Adrian, his gun raised. "Boss, should I take the shot?"

Derek pressed the gun harder against Claire’s head. "Try it, and her brains paint the wall."
