Chapter 8 - The Architect of ShadowsVictor Hawthorne stared at his glowing phone screen as red error messages flooded every financial dashboard he owned. Millions of dollars—his entire syndicate's operational funds—were vanishing into cyberspace before his eyes.

"No... no, that's impossible!" Victor shouted, his face turning pale with panic. "Derek told me he turned your secretary! He said she gave him access!"

Adrian chuckled darkly.

He turned his head slightly toward the open window of the SUV, where Claire sat watching. The terrified, trembling girl from the restaurant bathroom was gone.

In her place sat a woman whose expression had completely transformed.

Claire wiped a smudge of dirt from her cheek, leaned back against the leather seat, and calmly pulled a sleek, encrypted laptop out of her tote bag. She clicked a button, closing a master override program running on her screen.

"Derek is a greedy idiot, Victor," Claire said, her voice no longer small and broken, but ice-cold and razor-sharp. "It wasn't hard to let him steal a folder of encrypted junk data. We just needed an excuse to draw you out into the open so Adrian could sever your financial lifeline once and for all."

Victor staggered back, pointing a trembling finger at her. "You... you're not just a secretary. You're... you're the ghost."

"People call me many things," Claire said smoothly, closing her laptop with a soft click. "Usually, they just call me early for breakfast meetings."

Owen stepped up beside Adrian, leveling his pistol directly at Victor’s chest. "Game over, old man."

Victor looked around frantically. His enforcers had already lowered their weapons, realizing their accounts were frozen and their boss was ruined. They weren't going to die for a sinking ship.

"Kill him," Adrian commanded quietly.

Before Victor could scream, Owen’s suppressed weapon fired once. Victor Hawthorne collapsed into the muddy alley puddle, his empire dissolving around him in the cold autumn rain.
