Chapter 11 - Shadows in Zurich

The private tarmac at Zurich International Airport was slick with freezing rain, the biting Alpine wind howling across the runway as our Gulfstream taxied into a private hangar. My breath plumed white in the sub-zero air as I descended the metal steps, flanked by Agent Vance and two tactical operators carrying suppressed automatic weapons.
We weren't here on an official diplomatic warrant; this was a black-ops extraction, authorized in the greyest shadows of international maritime law.
"Keep your head down and your mouth shut," Agent Vance hissed into my ear as an armored Mercedes-Benz pulled up beside us. "Arthur Sterling’s primary holding facility isn't a corporate office. It's a fortified 19th-century alpine chalet overlooking Lake Lucerne, heavily guarded by private security contractors."
"How do we get inside?" I asked, pulling my black wool coat tight against the bitter chill.
"We don't break in," Vance replied, tapping a sleek tactical tablet. "We use an inside man. Or rather... an inside woman who just realized she was next on Arthur's chopping block."
My heart skipped a beat. "Vanessa?"
"Vanessa Cole," Vance nodded, sliding into the back seat of the Mercedes. "After she was sentenced to twelve years, her lawyers managed to secure a conditional cooperation agreement yesterday morning. She’s currently staying at a safehouse in Lucerne, wearing a wire, waiting for Arthur to make his final move to liquidate the remaining syndicate assets."
The drive from Zurich to Lake Lucerne took forty-five minutes through winding, fog-drenched mountain passes. The world outside the tinted windows was a blur of dark pine forests and jagged granite peaks, mirroring the dark, jagged turmoil inside my own head.
When we arrived at the safehouse—a modest, unassuming chalet nestled on the outskirts of a sleepy Swiss village—the air was thick with tension.
Inside, sitting at a wooden kitchen table illuminated by a single overhead bulb, was Vanessa.
She looked a decade older. The glossy, arrogant Manhattan executive who had whispered lies in my ear while recording my every move was gone. In her place was a terrified, hollow-eyed woman with unwashed hair and dark circles bruised deep beneath her eyes.
When the door opened and she saw me standing there in a federal tactical vest, she flinched as if I had struck her.
"Julian..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "I... I swear to God, I didn't know. I swear I didn't know they killed your father."
"Save the performance, Vanessa," I snapped, stepping forward and slamming my hands onto the table. "Where is Claire? Where is my son?"
Vanessa swallowed hard, her lower lip trembling as she pulled a heavily encrypted flash drive from her pocket and slid it across the wood.
"Arthur didn't just take Claire and Noah to hold them hostage," Vanessa said, her voice shaking violently. "He took them because Claire found the final piece of the puzzle before we even raided his office. She didn't just uncover the embezzlement... she found the offshore ledger proving that Arthur Sterling was the one who ordered the hit on your father—and that he plans to liquidate Carter Logistics entirely tonight, transferring every last cent to a secure account in the Cayman Islands, before eliminating Claire and the boy to tie up all loose ends."

"Tonight?" I stared at her in horror. "Where?"
"The old Sterling family estate," Vanessa whispered, pointing a trembling finger at a topographical map displayed on the tablet. "An isolated fortress perched on the cliffs of Lake Lucerne. Arthur is hosting a private gala for the Meridian Circle board members at midnight. That's when he's going to execute the final transfer... and silence your wife permanently."
