Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

Two weeks later, bail was denied. The prosecution presented overwhelming digital evidence tying me directly to the offshore shell accounts, alongside signed affidavits from Marcus Vance and Vanessa Cole testifying that I had orchestrated the entire embezzlement scheme alone, using them as unwitting pawns.

The betrayal was complete. Marcus had taken over as interim CEO of Carter Logistics, and Vanessa had been appointed as his executive VP. They were sitting on top of my empire, sipping champagne in the corner office I had built with my own sweat.

Meanwhile, I sat in a high-security holding unit awaiting trial, until an unexpected visitor arrived on a rainy Tuesday morning.

It wasn't Richard Vance. It was a man in an expensive charcoal suit carrying a leather briefcase bearing the logo of Sterling & Sterling Corporate Law—the most ruthless litigation firm on the East Coast.

"Mr. Carter," the man said, sliding into the visitor booth and picking up the phone. "My name is Arthur Sterling. I represent your wife, Claire Carter."

"My wife?" I scoffed bitterly through the glass. "She doesn't want a lawyer, she wants an executioner. What does she want now? She already took the house, the accounts, and my son. Is she coming for the clothes off my back?"

"She’s coming for the company," Arthur said smoothly, opening his briefcase and pulling out a thick stack of documents. "And she wants you to sign over your remaining voting shares in Carter Logistics."

"Never," I snarled, slamming my palm against the glass. "Those shares are all I have left! If I sign those over, Marcus and Vanessa win completely!"

"Marcus and Vanessa are already celebrating their victory," Arthur replied with a chilling smile. "They think they’ve stolen the empire out from under you. But they don't know what Claire discovered yesterday morning."

I narrowed my eyes. "What are you talking about?"

Arthur slid a single sheet of paper against the glass. It was an internal audit report—not of my accounts, but of Marcus Vance’s personal finances.

"While you were busy chasing Vanessa around Manhattan," Arthur explained quietly, "Marcus wasn't just helping you launder money. He was embezzling from both of you. He used Vanessa’s shell company to siphon forty million dollars out of Carter Logistics into an overseas trust controlled entirely by himself—leaving Vanessa out in the cold with zero equity."

My breath hitched. "Vanessa doesn't know?"

"Not yet," Arthur said. "She thinks she’s a partner in crime. In reality, she’s just the fall guy Marcus planned to abandon once the federal indictments dropped. And Claire? Claire found the transfer receipts hidden in a encrypted partition on Marcus’s home server—the server Claire secretly cloned the night she left your Greenwich home."

I stared at the document, the pieces of the puzzle violently rearranging themselves in my head. Marcus hadn't just framed me; he had used Vanessa to trap me so he could steal the entire company, while Vanessa thought she was stealing it from me.

"If I sign these shares over to Claire," I whispered, realizing the trap within the trap, "what happens?"

"If you sign," Arthur said, his eyes gleaming with predatory triumph, "Claire doesn't take the company to destroy it. She takes it as majority shareholder, activates a hostile takeover clause, fires Marcus and Vanessa with cause, hands all the evidence of their actual conspiracy to the federal prosecutor, and reclaims Carter Logistics in her own name."

"And me?" I asked, my voice trembling. "What happens to me?"

Arthur paused, looking at me with absolute indifference. "You spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary, Julian. But at least you’ll know the people who ruined you didn't get to keep your legacy."
