Chapter 9 - The Sins of the Father

The revelation of my father’s murder blew the roof off everything I thought I knew. For the next three weeks, my prison cell became a war room of federal depositions, conducted through closed-circuit video feeds under heavy armed guard.

Agent Vance laid out the horrific truth piece by piece. My father hadn't died of natural causes. He had discovered that Carter Logistics was being used as a massive front for international arms smuggling and money laundering—not by me, and not by Marcus, but by an elite syndicate operating out of Zurich, known only as the Meridian Circle.

And my father was about to blow the whistle to the Department of Justice.

"Who killed him?" I demanded during a grueling six-hour interrogation, my eyes bloodshot, my fingers trembling as I clutched a styrofoam cup of lukewarm prison coffee. "If my father didn't die of a stroke, and I didn't embezzle the money... who is running the syndicate?"

Agent Vance slid a photograph across the steel table. It was a picture taken at an exclusive charity gala in Geneva three years ago—long before my arrest, long before Claire left me. In the background, standing next to a prominent Swiss diplomat, was a man I recognized instantly.

Arthur Sterling. My wife’s high-powered corporate lawyer. The man Claire had hired to orchestrate the hostile takeover of Carter Logistics.

"Arthur..." I whispered, the name tasting like poison in my mouth. "He... he represents Claire. He’s her legal counsel."

"He was her legal counsel," Vance corrected coldly. "Until yesterday morning, when our tactical team raided Sterling & Sterling Corporate Law offices in Manhattan. Arthur Sterling didn't just represent your wife, Julian. He was the legal mastermind who set up the entire trap—not just to frame you, but to use Claire as a pawn to legally acquire Carter Logistics without triggering federal regulatory alarms."

The floor seemed to drop away from beneath me. The betrayal I felt toward Claire and Marcus suddenly paled in comparison to this monstrous, multi-layered web of deceit.

"Claire..." I choked out, a cold sweat breaking out across my neck. "Does Claire know? Does she know Arthur is tied to the syndicate that killed her father-in-law?"

"We tried to contact her yesterday afternoon," Vance said, his expression darkening. "We sent a federal protection detail to her Nantucket estate. But when our agents arrived... the house was empty."

My heart stopped dead in my chest. "Empty? What do you mean empty?"

"The security systems had been wiped clean. The front door was unlocked. Her car was in the garage, her laptop was sitting open on the kitchen island, and your son’s blue teddy bear was lying on the living room floor." Vance leaned across the table, his eyes boring into my soul. "Claire and your son have vanished, Julian. And according to our intercepted communication logs, Arthur Sterling boarded a private jet to Zurich four hours ago—with a high-value hostage on board."
