Chapter 10 - Dawn of a New Empire

The morning sun broke over the Connecticut estate, casting a brilliant, golden light across the manicured lawns and the glass conservatory. The air was crisp, clean, and entirely purged of the shadows that had haunted these halls for decades.
Down in the west parlor, the grand piano sat open.
I stood by the doorway, holding a cup of black coffee, watching as Elena gently guided little Lily’s small fingers across the yellowed ivory keys.
Ping. Ping. Ping.
A clumsy, uncoordinated little melody filled the empty marble hall, bright and full of life, echoing against the high ceilings where silence used to reign.
Lily turned around, her face glowing with a wide, toothy grin as she caught sight of me standing in the doorway.
"Dominic! Come play!" she called out, waving her hand frantically.
I smiled—a real, unreserved smile that I hadn't felt in twenty years—and walked across the room, kneeling down beside the bench.
"I don't know how to play, Lily," I said softly, adjusting Miss Rose, who was propped up neatly against the music stand.
"It's easy," Lily giggled, grabbing my large, calloused index finger and placing it directly onto middle C. "You just have to listen."
I pressed the key down.
The clear, resonant note rang out through the house, mingling with Elena’s soft laughter as she poured fresh tea at the nearby table.
The war was over. The traitors were buried. The empire was secure. But as I sat there in the morning sunlight with my girls, I finally understood what true power really was.

It wasn't fear, blood, or territory.
It was the right to protect the people who made the dark world worth living in.
