Chapter 19 - The Siege of Westchester

The night exploded into fire and lead.

Heavy automatic gunfire rattled against the reinforced exterior walls of the estate as flashbangs illuminated the dark Connecticut lawn with blinding white flashes of light. Through the security monitors, I watched half a dozen tactical operatives in matte-black gear swarm the front courtyards, overwhelming our outer guards with ruthless, military-grade precision.

"Secure the west wing!" I ordered Marco over the roar of gunfire, grabbing my Kimber 1911 from the rack. "Move Elena and Lily to the underground panic room immediately!"

"Boss, they're using thermal breaching charges on the main doors!" Marco yelled back, sliding a fresh magazine into his rifle.

I didn't hesitate. I sprinted up the concrete stairs into the grand foyer just as the heavy oak front doors blew inward in a deafening spray of splintered wood and iron shrapnel.

Smoke billowed into the grand hall. Through the thick gray haze, figures in black tactical gear poured through the wreckage, weapons raised.

I dropped to one knee behind a marble pillar, squeezing the trigger three times. Two operatives spun backward and hit the floor before they even cleared the threshold. The remaining intruders scattered, returning blind, furious fire that chipped the marble columns and shattered the crystal chandelier overhead.

From the balcony above, Antonio Moretti opened fire with a suppressed submachine gun, dropping another operative who tried to flank our position.

"You're getting old, Uncle!" I shouted over the gunfire.

"Old, but not dead yet!" Antonio shouted back with a grim smile, reloading his weapon with practiced efficiency.

The firefight was brutal, short, and intensely violent. Within four minutes, the assault team was neutralized, their bodies scattered across the ruined entryway of the mansion.

But as the smoke began to clear, I stepped out from behind the pillar, looking down at the radio comms unit clipped to the chest rig of the lead operative.

A recorded, automated voice was looping endlessly through the static speaker:

“Extraction complete. Target secured.”

My blood ran cold.

I spun around and sprinted toward the west wing.
