Chapter 17 - The Family Secret

The private study was heavy with tension as Antonio Moretti sank into one of the leather armchairs near the fireplace, refusing the scotch I offered him with a wave of his aged hand. Marco stood guard by the heavy oak door, his hand resting near his holster, eyeing the old man with undisguised suspicion.
"Talk," I commanded, sitting behind the mahogany desk. "Who could possibly threaten an empire that survived Colombo, Vance, and twenty years of syndicate wars?"
Antonio leaned forward, resting both hands on the silver handle of his cane. "You think Marcus Vance acted alone when he leaked the safehouse blueprints? You think Valentin Vance and Dr. Harrison Blake were operating on a whim when they tried to infiltrate your estate?"
"They were backed by international shell corporations and corrupt council members," I replied evenly.
"They were funded by our blood," Antonio corrected sharply, his dark eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. "My brother—your father—didn't die of a heart attack like they told you, Dominic. And he wasn't killed by a rival syndicate."
The room went dead silent. The crackle of the fireplace sounded deafening against the heavy stillness.
"What are you talking about?" I whispered, the words tearing through my throat. "The autopsy report... the family records..."
"Falsified," Antonio spat. "Forged by the very man who sat at our right hand for thirty years. The man you trusted to manage our European shipping lanes before you exiled him to Marseille. Lorenzo Moretti. My own flesh and blood—your uncle on your mother's side—who believed the Moretti name should belong to a global corporate cartel rather than a traditional syndicate."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. Lorenzo. The brother who had vanished to Europe decades ago, supposedly running our overseas logistics without interference.

"He’s been building an army in Geneva," Antonio continued, his voice dropping into a grave whisper. "He used Blake, Vance, and Colombo as pawns to weaken you from within, testing your defenses, probing your weaknesses. And now that they’ve failed, Lorenzo is coming to New York himself. Not to negotiate. To wipe out every last trace of your bloodline and take the entire empire."
Marco shifted uneasily by the door. "Boss... if Lorenzo is moving his primary assets out of Geneva, we won't have months to prepare. He’ll be on American soil before the week is out."
