Chapter 6 - THE TRAP CLOSES

I spun around. Standing at the bottom of the stairs, blocking our only exit, was Julian Sterling. In his right hand, he held a heavy brass paperweight shaped like a scale of justice; in his left, he held a sleek black Glock 19, pointed squarely at Marcus’s chest.
Behind him on the landing, Eleanor appeared, her pearls gleaming in the dim red light, her face twisted into an expression of venomous hatred.
"You should have packed your bags and left like I told you, Clara," Eleanor spat, descending the first two steps. "Instead, you just had to dig. You’ve always been a parasite, sucking the life and prestige out of this family since the day we pulled you out of that wretched clinic."
"You bought me," I said, my voice shaking with a rage so pure it burned cold. "You stole me from my mother, and then you stole my own daughter from my arms, pretending she was someone else's child just to protect your precious inheritance."
Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Business, Clara. The Sterling estate requires absolute purity of bloodline. When you got pregnant at eighteen by some shiftless warehouse worker—" he glared contemptuously at Marcus "—we couldn't let our legacy be dragged into the gutter. So we took the child, raised her under our control, and waited for you to learn your place."
"And when she wouldn't stay quiet?" Marcus asked, his voice low, stepping half an inch in front of me to shield my body. "When she started talking, when she started remembering? That's when you decided to throw her in a dumpster like household garbage?"
"She was crying," Eleanor snapped, waving a dismissive hand. "She was ruining the morning of Emma’s party. A little sedative and a trip to the back lot was a temporary logistical solution until we could ship her off to a boarding facility upstate."
Julian raised the barrel of the gun slightly, aligning it with my forehead. "And now, unfortunately, history repeats itself. You two weren't supposed to find the sub-vault. But since you’re here... a tragic break-in, a struggle over a firearm in the basement archives. It writes itself. The magistrate commissioner's office still has a few friends left in the coroner's department."
I looked at the gun. Then I looked past Julian’s shoulder, up at the top of the open vault door where the red emergency light flashed against the concrete wall.
I didn't flinch. I didn't scream.
Instead, a slow, grim smile touched the corners of my mouth.
"You think you're still in charge of the courtroom, Julian?" I asked softly.
Julian frowned, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "What are you talking about?"
"Look at the red light above the stairwell, Dad," I whispered.
Julian’s eyes flicked upward for a fraction of a second.
That fraction of a second was all Marcus needed. With explosive speed, Marcus lunged forward, slamming his palm upward against Julian’s wrist just as the gun discharged. The bullet punched a harmless hole into the concrete ceiling, raining a shower of white dust down upon Eleanor’s pristine pale blue blouse.
Before Julian could recover, Marcus swept his leg out, sending my father crashing hard onto the concrete floor, the brass scale of justice clattering away across the dust.
At the exact same second, the heavy steel security door at the top of the stairs blew open with a deafening crash.
Floodlights blinded the basement as half a dozen tactical officers in full gear swarmed down the stairs, their assault rifles raised, led by Detective Vance.
"Federal Marshals and CPD! Nobody move!" Vance shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.
Eleanor screamed, clutching her pearls as two officers pinned her against the filing cabinet, snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists with professional efficiency. On the floor, Julian groaned, spitting blood from a split lip as Marcus held his knee firmly against my father’s spine, pinning him face-down in the dust of his own empire.
Vance walked down the steps, stepping over Julian’s discarded gun, and stopped in front of me. He looked at the open ledger in my hands, then at my parents in cuffs.

"Well," Vance said, a grim smile touching his lips. "Looks like we found more than enough for a federal RICO indictment. Trafficking, kidnapping, child endangerment, and corruption of the bench."
Vance pulled a pair of clean handcuffs from his belt and walked past Julian toward Eleanor. "Mother and daughter of the year. Let's take them downtown."
