Chapter 8 - THE SUNNY SIDE OF FOREVER

The morning of Lily’s fifth birthday was nothing like the year before.

There was no wrong kind of quiet. At 6:12 a.m., according to the time on my phone, the kitchen of our new home—a modest, sunlit farmhouse with a wrap-around porch overlooking an open green meadow—was filled with the best kind of noise.

Cartoon voices echoed from the living room television. Sticky little feet padded across the wooden floorboards with joyful determination. And the rich, buttery smell of warm pancake syrup drifted up the hallway, mingling with the scent of fresh coffee and vanilla extract.

I stood at the kitchen stove in a comfortable linen apron, flipping a golden pancake that had a clumsy, lopsided smiley face made of chocolate chips and sliced strawberries.

Marcus walked up behind me, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and pressing a warm kiss into the crook of my neck.

"Smells incredible, Chef," Marcus murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder. "Are we ready for the onslaught of four-year-old energy?"

"Always," I smiled, turning around in his arms to look up into his eyes.

There were no paper plates from a forced party. No pink banners paid for by lies. No cold, menacing shadows lurking in the hallway. Just us, the morning light pouring through the wide bay windows, and a future that belonged entirely to us.

Down the hall, a pair of small hands pushed open the swinging kitchen door.

Lily marched in wearing her favorite purple pajamas, her silver bracelet with the tiny heart charm glinting brightly against her wrist as she waved her stuffed rabbit in the air.

"Mommy! Daddy!" she announced to the room like a tiny, triumphant radio host. "The sun is up, my rabbit had a successful recovery from his nap, and I demand my birthday pancakes with the extra smiley face right now!"

I laughed, scooping her up into my arms and spinning her around until she shrieked with pure, unadulterated delight, burying her face in my neck as we both collapsed into a fit of happy, chaotic laughter.

Outside the window, the sun climbed high over the open green fields, bright and warm and golden, burning away every last shadow of the past.
