Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Power

Before Sterling could pull the trigger, a deafening crack echoed through the foundation of the room.
The load-bearing support beam directly above Sterling’s head—which I had pre-cut three minutes prior using the thermal lance on the exterior wall—buckled under the weight of the thousand-gallon aquarium sitting in the room directly above us.
Ton after ton of reinforced glass, water, and decorative stone crashed through the ceiling, slamming down directly onto the desk and taking Sterling off his feet.
The force of the impact threw me backward against the reinforced wall. Water flooded the basement floor instantly.
Sterling was pinned beneath a massive section of oak paneling and steel joists, coughing blood, his gun lost in the murky water. The velvet box containing the antidote was thrown clear, landing on a raised metal platform near the doorway.
I scrambled forward, grabbed the box, and opened it. Inside were two sterile glass ampoules labeled DMPS – Chelation Agent.
“You... you crazy bastard...” Sterling gasped, struggling to breathe as water rose around his chest. “You destroyed the entire structural integrity of the wing...”
“I know,” I said, placing the ampoules safely inside my padded tactical vest. “I designed it, remember?”
I turned to sprint toward the exit, but as I reached the broken doorway, the sound of a gun cocking stopped me dead in my tracks.
Standing in the hallway, illuminated by the flashing red emergency lights of the estate, was my cousin Mason’s father—my Uncle Richard.
He was holding a heavy semi-automatic handgun pointed directly at my chest.
“Hand over the box, Connor,” Richard said, his voice trembling with an insane blend of fear and greed.
I stared at my uncle in absolute disbelief. “Uncle Richard? You were in on this too? You let Teresa poison my wife? You let your own son take the fall for grand larceny last night?!”
“Mason is weak!” Richard spat, tears of rage welling in his eyes. “He cracked the second the cops showed up! But Teresa and I spent ten years planning this! That waterfront property belonged to the Vance family, and my wife was Vance’s half-sister! We were cut out of the will! We deserved that money!”
“Your wife died ten years ago, Richard!” I shouted over the sound of rushing water. “You’re killing an innocent woman and a child for money that isn't yours!”
“It IS mine!” Richard screamed, taking a step forward, raising the gun to align with my forehead. “Give me the antidote, Connor! If she dies, the estate goes to probate, and as the closest surviving relative of Vance’s half-sister, I claim the entirety of the waterfront! Hand it over, or I put a bullet through your heart right here!”
Water was rising past our knees now. The ceiling groaned ominously above us, threatening a total structural failure.
I looked at Richard, saw the absolute madness in his eyes, and realized there was no reasoning with him. He was a desperate man who had lost everything to his own greed.
“Take it,” I said softly, reaching toward my vest as if to surrender the box.
Instead, I kicked the heavy steel utility door next to me with maximum force. The heavy iron door swung outward, slamming directly into Richard’s arm with crushing pressure.
BANG!
The gun discharged harmlessly into the concrete ceiling as Richard screamed in agony, his arm breaking under the impact. The pistol splashed into the rising water.
I didn’t hesitate. I vaulted over his writhing body, shoved through the collapsed basement corridor, and burst out into the daylight where Big Mike was waiting in the running concrete mixer.
“Get us to the hospital! NOW!” I roared, sliding into the passenger seat.

Behind us, the east wing of Riverview Manor began to sink into the mud of the Cumberland River as the internal support walls gave way completely.
