Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Reckoning

The revelation hung in the sterile hospital air like a heavy fog.
“What are you talking about, Davis?” I asked, standing up slowly from Amy’s bedside. “Julian Vance had another heir?”
Officer Davis handed me the yellowed document. It was an official adoption record from Davidson County, dated thirty-four years ago.
I scanned down the page until my eyes hit the names of the adoptive parents: Teresa Bradley and Thomas Bradley.
My knees felt weak. I grabbed the edge of the bed frame to steady myself.
“No...” I whispered, shaking my head in horror. “No... that’s impossible.”
“You were adopted, Connor,” Davis said gently. “Your mother—Teresa—never gave birth to you. Julian Vance had a brief affair with a woman in 1992. She gave birth to twins: a boy and a girl. Because of medical complications and extreme poverty, she put the infants up for private adoption.”
I stared at the document in absolute shock. “Twins?”
“Teresa and her husband couldn't have children,” Davis continued. “They adopted the baby boy—you. Six months later, the mother’s health stabilized briefly, and she placed the baby girl—Amy—with an orphanage in East Tennessee before she passed away.”
My world spun out of control. The horrifying implication hit me like a freight train.
“Amy... and I... are biological brother and sister?!” I nearly screamed, horror tearing through my chest.
Amy, who had just regained consciousness and was listening from the bed, let out a gasping sob, her hands flying to her mouth in utter terror.
“No! Connor! No!” she cried, tears streaming down her pale face. “That can’t be true! Frederick... our baby...”
“Wait!” Officer Davis yelled, raising his hands quickly to calm us down. “Listen to me! Read the entire document, Connor! Read page two!”
I scrambled to flip the page with shaking hands.
Page two contained a DNA comparison affidavit filed by the State Board of Health three weeks ago—a document that Teresa had tried to destroy in the fireplace of my house during the party.
“Teresa was lying to you about the adoption to mentally destroy you,” Davis explained rapidly. “You ARE Thomas Bradley’s legitimate biological son. Teresa couldn't conceive, so Thomas had an affair with Julian Vance’s sister. YOU are Julian Vance’s biological nephew.”
I stopped breathing, reading the fine print line by line.
“And Amy?” I asked, my voice hoarse.
“Amy is Julian Vance’s biological daughter,” Davis said. “You and Amy are FIRST COUSINS. You are not siblings. But more importantly—Teresa knew that if you and Amy stayed married, your combined inheritance would legally consolidate the entire Vance estate, wiping out her and Richard’s ability to claim a single cent.”
Amy let out a ragged breath, slumping back against her pillows as the terrifying horror of sibling incest vanished, replaced by the sheer, sickening realization of how evil Teresa’s psychological warfare had been.
“She wanted us to believe we were brother and sister,” Amy sobbed, reaching out for my hand. “She wanted us to destroy our own marriage and abandon our child out of shame...”
“She tried to use the ultimate taboo to break your spirit,” Davis said grimly. “She knew that if you thought your son was the product of incest, you would step down from the company, surrender custody, and flee the state in disgrace. Leaving the $40 million estate sitting right in her lap.”
I gripped Amy’s hand tightly, feeling the warmth returning to her skin. The web of lies had been so deep, so intricate, so utterly vile that it defied human comprehension.
“Where is she now?” I asked, my voice dropping an octave into a tone of quiet, lethal resolve.

“She’s being transferred to the federal holding facility,” Davis said. “Her trial starts in three weeks. But Connor... Sterling’s legal team just filed an emergency motion for bail. They have a high-powered judge on their payroll. He might be out on the street by tonight.”
