Chapter 4 - THE RESTRUCTURING OF WEALTH

The Ultimate UltimatumRichard gripped the edge of Eleanor’s mahogany desk, his knuckles turning white. “Anything. Name your price. What do you want?”
Eleanor pulled a pre-drafted legal document from her portfolio and slid it across the table.
“This is a binding community restitution contract,” Eleanor explained calmly.
“First: Your law firm, Caldwell, Pierce & Bennett, will commit fifty percent of its total billable hours pro-bono for the next five years to represent low-income families facing unlawful evictions in this city.”
Richard gasped. “Fifty percent?! That will eliminate our profit margins!”
“It will eliminate your excess profits,” Eleanor corrected. “It will keep your staff employed, cover your overhead, and provide immensely valuable legal aid to thousands of vulnerable citizens who are currently being crushed by predatory landlords. Net societal gain: high.”
Vanessa looked at her husband in horror. “Richard, no! What about our lifestyle? Our country club membership? The boys’ private academy?!”
Eleanor ignored Vanessa and continued.
“Second: The Caldwell estate in the suburban hills—a twelve-thousand-square-foot property with seven bedrooms—will be placed into a public land trust. It will be converted into a community arts and youth center funded by your remaining assets. You and your family will relocate to a modest two-bedroom apartment in the city center.”
“Are you insane?!” Vanessa screamed, forgetting her fear for a brief moment. “You want us to live in a two-bedroom apartment?! Like... like ordinary people?!”
“Ordinary people live dignified lives within those spaces every day,” Eleanor replied coldly. “You have demonstrated that excess wealth has corrupted your capacity for basic human empathy. By reallocating your physical space and surplus wealth, we restore balance and teach your children the value of community, hard work, and respect.”
“And if we say no?” Richard asked, his voice shaking uncontrollably.
Eleanor gestured toward Sarah Vance.
May you like
“If you refuse,” Sarah stated smoothly, “the criminal charges for felony assault will proceed against Mrs. Caldwell tomorrow morning. The security footage will be released in full resolution to every major news network. The landlord will proceed with the immediate 7-day eviction notice. Your firm’s major clients have already signed letters of intent to transfer their accounts to rival firms. You will be bankrupt, disgraced, and your wife will face up to eighteen months in county jail.”
Richard looked at Vanessa. Vanessa looked at Richard. The illusion of their invincibility was completely shattered.
