CHAPTER 2 — THE FAMILY SECRET THEY BURIED

Ethan's hands shook so violently that the photograph nearly slipped from his fingers.

"This..."

he whispered.

"...where did you get this?"

The girl answered softly.

"My mother kept it hidden."

"She told me never to show anyone unless she was gone."

"My name is Lily."

"She died three weeks ago."

"I had nowhere else to go."

Every wealthy guest listened in complete silence.

The manager quietly stepped back.

Even the waiters stopped working.

Ethan slowly unfolded the letter.

The handwriting belonged to his father's first love.

A woman whose name had never once been mentioned inside the Caldwell mansion.

The letter began:

"If you're reading this, then I am gone.

Ethan... none of this is your fault.

Your father loved me once.

When I became pregnant, his powerful family forced us apart.

They told him the baby had died.

They told me he had abandoned us.

We both lived inside the same lie.

Lily is your sister.

She deserves a family.

Please don't let history abandon her twice."

The letter slipped from Ethan's hand.

His entire body felt numb.

He remembered every family portrait hanging inside their mansion.

His father always looked strangely sad.

Now...

he finally understood why.

At that exact moment...

a black luxury car screeched to a stop outside the restaurant.

Several bodyguards rushed upstairs.

Behind them walked Richard Caldwell.

Ethan's father.

The billionaire froze the instant he saw the photograph lying on the table.

His face drained of every color.

"No..."

he whispered.

His knees nearly gave out.

He stared at Lily.

Then at the woman in the photograph.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I searched for you..."

he whispered.

"For eighteen years."

Lily stepped backward.

"My mother said you forgot us."

Richard broke down.

"I never knew you were alive."

"My parents lied to both of us."

"They destroyed everything."

For the first time in decades...

one of the city's most powerful men cried in front of strangers.

But someone nearby wasn't crying.

Richard's elderly mother...

who had just arrived...

stood completely silent.

Everyone slowly turned toward her.

She lowered her eyes.

"I did it."

The confession shocked every guest.

"I thought protecting our family's reputation mattered more than love."

"I separated them."

"I lied."

"I destroyed two lives."

Richard looked at his own mother with heartbreak.

"You stole my daughter."
