Chapter 13 - The Sister’s Trap"SARAH!" I screamed, grabbing Mark’s arm in pure panic. "She has Sarah!"

"Valerie, listen to me!" Mark barked into the phone. "Where are you?!"
"Oh, Mark... you're always running to the rescue, just like Alex did," Valerie taunted gently. "If you want to see Lucy’s sweet sister alive, come to the old department store downtown. Floor 4. The very elevator where this beautiful story began. You have twenty minutes before the roof goes up in smoke... just like Lucy's house."
The line went dead.
"I'm calling SWAT," Chief Vance ordered immediately, reaching for his radio. "We'll surround the building."
"No!" I stopped Vance, my eyes fierce with desperate adrenaline. "If she sees police sirens, she'll kill Sarah! You saw what she did tonight! She has nothing left to lose!"
"Lucy, you are not going in there!" Mark insisted, placing his hands firm on my shoulders. "You have to stay here with Maya!"
"Sarah is my sister, Mark!" I cried, tears streaming down my face. "Valerie wants me! She’s been obsessed with taking my life for over a year! If I don't go, Sarah dies!"
Mark looked at me, seeing the absolute, unyielding resolve in my eyes. He knew he couldn't stop me.
"Fine," Mark snapped, turning to Chief Vance. "Chief, give me your master override keys to the department store elevator shaft and two emergency respirators. Hold SWAT two blocks back until I give the signal."
Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second, then nodded, handing over his tactical belt. "Be careful, son. She’s completely out of her mind."
Ten minutes later, Mark’s paramedic rig sped through the rain-soaked streets of downtown Chicago, running every red light with its sirens blaring.
I sat in the passenger seat, holding a metal wrench from the vehicle’s toolkit in my lap.

The nightmare had begun in that department store elevator seven months ago.
And tonight, it was going to end there.
