Chapter 5 - The Mastermanipulator UnmaskedThe next afternoon, I sat in the office of my attorney, Marcus Vance—who, by a strange stroke of fate, was the estranged brother of Fire Chief Richard Vance.

Marcus reviewed the printout of the text message and the timeline of the elevator rescue. His sharp eyes narrowed as he adjusted his glasses.

"This changes everything, Lucy," Marcus said, laying the papers flat on his mahogany desk. "This isn't just evidence for a contested divorce. This is evidence of extortion and criminal reckless endangerment."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Valerie Cole intentionally withheld critical information from emergency responders while knowing a pregnant woman was in medical distress," Marcus explained. "And Alex Davis acted under duress to conceal an alleged extramarital affair, neglecting his duty as a licensed first responder."

"I don't care about ruining his career anymore, Marcus," I said coldly. "I want full legal and physical custody of my daughter. I don't want that man or Valerie anywhere near my child."

"We will get it," Marcus promised. "In fact, we have enough leverage right now to force Alex to sign the divorce settlement on our terms—without going to a drawn-out trial."

"How?"

Marcus smiled grimly. "We invite him here. Today."

An hour later, the door to the law firm’s conference room opened.

Alex walked in, looking haggard. His eyes were sunken, his skin pale, and he looked like he had lost ten pounds in two weeks.

When he saw me sitting at the end of the long glass table, a flicker of desperate hope flashed in his eyes.

"Lucy..." he stepped forward, reaching into his pocket. "I came as soon as your lawyer called. Please... let's talk about this. I'll sign whatever you want regarding the finances, but please don't take my rights to our baby—"

"Sit down, Alex," Marcus commanded coldly, gesturing to the chair across from us.

Alex hesitated, then sat down slowly.

Marcus slid a single sheet of paper across the polished table.

It was the high-resolution printout of the text message Valerie had sent him at 6:45 p.m.

"If you come rescue us, save me first or I’ll tell her about last night at the hotel."

Alex looked down at the paper.

Every drop of color drained from his face. His hands began to shake violently.

"Where... where did you get this?" Alex stammered, his voice barely a breath.

"It doesn't matter where we got it," I said, leaning forward, looking him straight in the eyes. "What matters is that you lied to me. You lied to the press. You lied to your Fire Chief. You didn't run past me because you were confused, Alex. You ran past me because you were terrified she was going to expose you."

"Lucy, listen to me!" Alex slammed his hands on the table, tears spilling over his cheeks. "It’s not what it looks like! I swear to God, it’s not what it looks like!"

"Then explain it!" Sarah shouted from beside me. "Explain why she threatened to tell Lucy about 'last night at the hotel'!"

"Because she set me up!" Alex sobbed out, putting his head in his hands. "The night before the elevator incident, Valerie called me saying she was suicidal. She was staying at the Drake Hotel. I went to her room to calm her down! I was there for twenty minutes! Nothing happened! I swear on my life, nothing happened between us!"

"Then why didn't you tell me, Alex?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Why did you hide it?"

"Because I knew how it looked!" Alex cried out. "I knew you were already upset with me for missing the ultrasound! I was scared you would leave me! And when Valerie sent that text in the elevator... I panicked! I thought if I didn't get her out first, she would start screaming in front of the news cameras and ruin my life!"

"And in doing so," Marcus interjected coldly, "you almost killed your wife and your unborn child."

Alex closed his eyes, let out a heart-wrenching sob, and slumped back into his chair. He had no defense left. The truth was out, naked and ugly.

"Here are the terms," Marcus said, sliding a thick document forward. "Full legal and physical custody to Lucy. The marital home goes to Lucy. You will pay child support as calculated by state law. In exchange, we will not hand this evidence over to the Fire Department Board of Conduct or the District Attorney's office for criminal charges."

Alex stared at the divorce papers.

He looked at the signature line.

Then he looked at me—the woman he had promised to protect above all others, now looking at him with nothing but pure, unadulterated contempt.

With a shaking hand, Alex picked up the pen.
