Chapter 7 - The Unbreakable VowThree weeks after the gala scandal.

The aftermath was swift and devastating.
Valerie Cole was formally indicted by the grand jury for reckless endangerment and extortion. Ostracized by her social circle and facing massive legal fees, she fled Chicago in disgrace before her trial date.
Alex Davis was permanently terminated from the Chicago Fire Department following the Board of Conduct’s review. His reputation as a heroic firefighter was obliterated. Unable to find work in Illinois, he packed his belongings into a small pickup truck, preparing to leave the state forever.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when my water broke.
I was at Sarah’s apartment when the sharp, undeniable contractions hit. Two weeks early.
"Sarah!" I gasped, clutching the kitchen counter as a wave of pain washed over me. "It’s time!"
Sarah rushed into the room, grabbing her car keys and my hospital bag. "Okay! Stay calm! We're going right now!"
Thirty minutes later, I was in the labor delivery room at Rush University Medical Center.
The contractions were intense and fast. The monitors were beeping, and nurses moved quickly around the room preparing for the delivery.
"You're doing great, Lucy! Just keep breathing!" Sarah held my left hand, wiping sweat from my forehead.
Suddenly, the door to the delivery room opened.
A young man in a dark blue paramedic jacket stepped inside, carrying a sterile medical box requested by the doctor.
It was Mark—the rookie firefighter. He had recently completed his transition to full-time municipal paramedic service.
When Mark saw me, he stopped in his tracks. "Lucy...?"
"Mark?" I breathed out through a sharp contraction.
"How is she doing?" Mark immediately asked the attending obstetrician, his professional instincts kicking in.
"She’s fully dilated, but the baby's heart rate is dropping slightly during contractions," the doctor replied. "We need strong support here."
Mark didn't hesitate. He set the box down, sanitized his hands, pulled on sterile gloves, and stepped up to the right side of my bed.
"Lucy," Mark said, his voice deep, calm, and incredibly steady. "Look at me."
I turned my head, my eyes locking onto his.
"You endured seven hours in a suffocating box to protect this baby," Mark said, taking my right hand in his firm, warm grip. "You are the strongest person I have ever met. You don't need anyone else to save you. You're going to pull your daughter into this world right now."
Tears sprang to my eyes, but for the first time in months, they weren't tears of pain or betrayal. They were tears of pure, unyielding strength.
"Okay," I whispered. "Okay!"
"On the next contraction, Lucy! Push!" the doctor commanded.
I squeezed Mark’s hand with everything I had left in my body. I bore down, channeling every ounce of hurt, every tear I had cried in that dark elevator, turning my suffering into absolute force.
"Push! She's right there!" Sarah yelled.
"You've got this, Lucy! Push!" Mark encouraged, his grip steady as a rock.
A final, powerful wave surged through me. I let out a fierce, breathless cry—
And then...
A high-pitched, loud, beautiful sound rang through the delivery room.
WAAAAAH! WAAAAAH!
The room filled with light.
"It’s a girl!" the doctor announced, smiling as she lifted the tiny, crying infant into the air. "Healthy baby girl!"
They placed her directly onto my chest.
She was warm, covered in soft pink skin, her tiny fingers reaching out into the air until they brushed against my skin. Her dark eyes blinked open, looking straight up at me.
May you like
"Hi, my love," I sobbed, holding her close to my heart, kissing her forehead over and over again. "Hi, Maya... I kept you safe. I kept my promise."
Beside the bed, Mark looked down at us, a quiet, gentle smile on his face, a tear sneaking down his soot-dusted cheek.
