Chapter 3 - The Warrant DropsMason chuckled, tapping the pen against the legal papers. "She’s right, Clara. You thought you were so smart, hiding that burner phone. We found it in the pantry three hours ago and burned it. You have no proof. No phone, no witnesses, no money. You're broke, crazy, and broken. Sign the papers."

I looked at Mason, then at Beatrice.

Then, for the first time in three years, I laughed. It wasn't a desperate laugh. It was a dark, ringing sound that made Mason hesitate.

"What's so funny, you crazy bitch?" Beatrice spat.

"You think I relied on a burner phone in a pantry?" I looked straight into the tiny button camera pinhead on my gown. "Detective Miller... I believe you have everything you need."

Before Mason could process my words, the heavy oak door of the ICU room was smashed open with such force it slammed against the wall.

Four armed officers poured into the room, guns drawn, followed by Detective Miller—a tall, battle-weary homicide investigator with a thick gray mustache—and my attorney, Sarah Lindqvist, carrying a leather briefcase.

"DOWN ON THE GROUND! BOTH OF YOU! NOW!" Detective Miller roared.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Beatrice screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek. "I am Beatrice Vance! My late husband was a judge! You can't touch me! She's mentally ill!"

"Mrs. Vance, keep your mouth shut or I will add obstruction to your charges," Detective Miller barked. He shoved Mason face-first against the hospital wall, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. "Mason Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, witness tampering, and conspiracy."

"This is a mistake!" Mason yelled, struggling against the cuffs. "She fell down the stairs! She's crazy!"

"Save it for the judge, kid," Miller snarled. "We’ve been listening to every word you said for the last ten minutes on a secure digital feed. We heard you admit to the assault. We heard your mother threaten to murder her. And more importantly..."

Detective Miller pulled a stamped, signed legal document from his inner coat pocket and held it in front of Beatrice’s pale, trembling face.

"While you two were sitting in the waiting room enjoying your lattes, a tactical team executed an emergency search warrant on your home at 1420 Elmcrest. We pried up the master bedroom floorboards."

Beatrice’s face drained of all color. The haughty, arrogant matriarch collapsed to her knees as the officers pulled her hands behind her back.

"We found the second ledger, Mrs. Vance," Sarah Lindqvist stepped forward, her voice calm and deadly. "And we found the soil samples beneath the floorboards. The forensics team is currently unearthing human bone fragments. The medical examiner is already cross-referencing the DNA with Mason’s first wife, Laura."
