Chapter 4 - The Secrets Beneath 1420 ElmcrestThe arrest made national news within hours.

Headline banners flashed across every major news network: "THE HOUSE OF HORRORS: SOCIALITE MOTHER AND SON ARRESTED IN ATTEMPTED MURDER AND COLD CASE DISCOVERY."

While Beatrice and Mason were remanded to the county jail without bail, I remained in the hospital under 24-hour police protection. But my physical recovery was only half the battle. The true nightmare was understanding the depth of the web I had escaped.

Two days after the arrest, Detective Miller sat beside my bed, sipping stale police-station coffee. He laid three manila folders on my bedside table.

"I've seen some sick families in my thirty years on the force, Clara," Miller said quietly, "but the Vances take the crown. We finished excavating the crawl space under the master bedroom today."

I braced myself. "What did you find?"

"It wasn't just Laura," Miller said, his voice dropping an octave. "Laura Vance didn't die of a sudden heart attack five years ago like Mason claimed. We found high traces of arsenic in her preserved hair follicles. But beneath her remains, we found a safe. Inside that safe was a set of journals belonging to Mason's father, Judge Richard Vance."

I frowned. "The judge? He died of a stroke seven years ago."

"That's what the death certificate says," Miller replied, shaking his head. "But according to the journals, Judge Vance discovered that Beatrice was running a massive tax fraud and money laundering scheme through her high-society charity foundation. When he threatened to go to the federal prosecutors, she poisoned him slowly over eighteen months."

I felt a cold shriek of horror grip my chest. "She killed her husband... and Mason knew?"

"Mason didn't just know—he helped her cover it up," Miller explained. "And when Laura, his first wife, accidentally found the offshore account records in 2021, Mason did the same thing to her. Then you came along. You were supposed to be the quiet, obedient replacement who wouldn't ask questions. But when you started noticing the missing money and pointed out Beatrice's suspicious behavior, they realized you were too smart."

"The stew," I whispered, tears brimming in my eyes. "The salt... I told her to put less salt in the stew because of his blood pressure... but it wasn't salt, was it?"

Miller locked eyes with me. "No. We lab-tested the spice jars recovered from Beatrice’s kitchen. She was slowly micro-dosing you with thallium—a heavy metal poison that causes weakness, confusion, and memory loss. They weren't just trying to make you look 'unstable' to the court, Clara. They were actively killing you. The broken leg was just Beatrice losing her patience because you were resisting the poison."
