Chapter 6 - The Uninvited WitnessThe side door of the courtroom opened, and a woman stepped through.

The room gasped in unison. Flashbulbs went off like lightning strikes, causing the judge to bang his gavel repeatedly. "Order! Order in this court!"
Mason stood up so fast his chair flipped over behind him. "No... no, that's impossible!" he screamed, his face turning ghostly white.
Beatrice clutched her chest, letting out a strangled, breathless gasp.
Walking down the aisle toward the witness stand was a woman with severe scars across her neck and cheeks, walking with a slight limp of her own.
It was Laura. Mason’s "dead" first wife.
She wasn't dead.
For five years, the world—and Mason—believed that the bone fragments found under the floorboards belonged to Laura Vance. But as the state forensic laboratory had revealed twenty-four hours prior, the bones beneath the floor were actually the remains of Judge Richard Vance’s former secretary, a young woman who had disappeared in 2018 after discovering Beatrice's financial crimes.
Laura had survived.
Five years ago, after being poisoned and viciously beaten by Mason, Laura had managed to jump from a moving vehicle while Mason was transporting her to a remote dump site. Terrified, half-dead, and knowing that Judge Vance’s judicial connections protected the family, Laura had fled the state under a false identity, living in deep hiding in a small rural town in Montana.
She had spent five years waiting for someone strong enough to bring the Vance family down. When my news story hit the national headlines, Laura had contacted my attorney.
Laura took the witness stand, adjusted the microphone, and looked straight into Mason’s trembling eyes.

"My name is Laura Vance," she testified, her voice steady and echoing with absolute authority. "Five years ago, Mason Vance tried to strangle me in our kitchen while Beatrice held my hands down. They told me no one would ever believe me because I was 'just an emotional girl.' Today, I am here to ensure they never hurt another woman again."
The defense table collapsed into utter chaos. Victor Vance dropped his pen, realizing his case was utterly dead. Beatrice began hyperventilating, screaming incoherently at the judge, while Mason buried his face in his hands, weeping hysterically.
