By 1:00 AM, the wedding reception had shifted from formal elegance to loose-tongued indulgence. The elite of Connecticut were thoroughly intoxicated on thousand-dollar bottles of scotch, and Merrick Thornwell was standing near the grand staircase, listening to a senior board member talk about the company's upcoming stock merger.
"With a new wife and an heir on the way, Merrick, the investors are feeling incredibly secure," the board member said, patting Merrick on the shoulder. "Stability is everything in our world."
"I agree," Merrick smiled, though a strange, tightening sensation had formed in his chest over the last hour. He brushed it off as stress. He turned to look at Tinsley, who was laughing with his mother near the ice sculpture. Everything was going according to plan. The old, broken chapter of his life was closed.
Suddenly, the heavy oak double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The music didn't stop immediately, but the atmosphere changed. A man dressed in a simple, rain-drenched courier uniform walked past the security guards. He wasn't supposed to be there. The guards moved to intercept him, but the man held up a bright red, waterproof envelope with a legal seal stamped across the back.
"Delivery for Merrick Thornwell," the courier's voice rang out, carrying across the marble foyer and into the ballroom. "Personal and confidential. Signed for by the medical courier service of St. Jude’s."
Merrick frowned, stepping away from the board member. "What is the meaning of this? Security, remove him."
"Sir, I was instructed to deliver this directly to your hand, in front of your witnesses, as per the legal disclosure clause of your prior dissolution of marriage," the courier said, his voice entirely devoid of fear. He extended the red envelope.
The word marriage caught Helena’s attention. She marched over, her diamonds clicking against her throat. "Merrick, what is this nonsense? Is that woman trying to sue for more money? The audacity! She signed the waiver!"
Tinsley joined them, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the red envelope. "Merrick, don't open it. Have the lawyers handle it tomorrow."
But curiosity—and a sudden, icy dread—gripped Merrick. The return address on the upper left corner didn't belong to a law firm. It belonged to the department of neonatology at St. Jude’s Hospital.
Merrick took the envelope. The paper felt heavy, damp from the storm outside. He tore the top edge off.
A stack of papers slid out. The first was a certified DNA profile and birth registry. The second was a legal notice of maternal custody.
Merrick’s eyes scanned the first page. Patient Name: Lennox Hargrove. Date of Delivery: October 24th. Time of Delivery: 11:12 PM – 11:42 PM.
"What is it, darling?" Tinsley asked, her voice tight with rising anxiety. "Is it a lawsuit?"
Merrick didn't answer. His breath caught in his throat. His eyes locked onto the line labeled Number of Offspring.
Four (4). Live births. Monochronic-triamniotic.
Below that were the preliminary blood type and genetic marker match profiles. Because Lennox had undergone routine fertility mapping during their marriage, the hospital had automatically cross-referenced the paternal DNA on file for standard medical history logging. The match probability was listed in bold, black ink: 99.99% Paternal Match: Merrick Thornwell.
"This... this is a mistake," Merrick whispered, his face draining of all color. The champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the marble floor. The sharp crack of glass finally made the orchestra stop playing. The room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
"Merrick?" Helena snapped, grabbing the papers from his limp hands. "Let me see that. If that girl is trying to claim she adopted a child to spite us—"
Helena’s voice died in her throat. Her eyes darted across the page. She read the names. She read the words Quadruplets. She saw the certified signature of the chief medical officer and the official DNA stamp.
"No," Helena gasped, her chest heaving. "No, this is impossible! She was barren! The doctors said she was the reason the Thornwell line was dying!"
"What do you mean, quadruplets?" Tinsley shrieked, snatching the papers from Helena. Her perfectly composed face distorted into a mask of pure horror as she looked at the dates and times. Lennox had been pregnant during the entire divorce proceedings. She had been carrying four heirs while Tinsley was planning this wedding.
"Merrick!" Tinsley yelled, her voice echoing off the French mirrors. "Tell me this is a lie! Tell me she cheated on you!"
But Merrick couldn't speak. He was staring at the bottom of the page, where four tiny, ink-black footprints had been stamped in a row. Four perfect, undeniable proofs of life.

Helena's eyes rolled back into her head. With a soft groan, the matriarch of the Thornwell family collapsed onto the shattered remnants of her son's wedding toast, her silk dress soaking in spilled champagne.
The ballroom erupted into chaos. Reporters rushed forward, their cameras clicking furiously, capturing the image of the billionaire standing frozen in the middle of his own ruin, staring at the evidence that his entire life was built on a lie.
