The ride back to the Thornwell mansion was a blur of high speed and blinding fury. Merrick broke through the front doors of his home like a hurricane, ignoring the catering staff who were still cleaning up the remnants of the disaster reception.
"Tinsley!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Tinsley, get down here right now!"
He found her in the master dressing room. The champagne silk wedding dress had been thrown carelessly onto the floor, and she was frantically packing designer suitcases. Two of her friends were there, helping her fold clothes with panicked haste.
"Get out," Merrick said to the friends, his voice dangerously low.
The two women didn't hesitate. They dropped the clothes and fled, slamming the door behind them.
Tinsley turned to face him, her platinum hair now messy, her eyes rimmed with red. She held a diamond necklace in her hand like a weapon. "Don't look at me like that, Merrick! I am the victim here! Your ex-wife set us up! She wanted to humiliate me on my wedding night!"
Merrick walked toward her, his presence suffocating. He didn't stop until he was inches away, his shadow completely covering her. "Six months ago," he whispered. "The clinic in Boston. What did you do, Tinsley?"
Tinsley’s breath hitched. For a fraction of a second, a flash of pure guilt crossed her features before she forced her jaw to harden. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Lennox knows," Merrick growled, grabbing her wrist. "She knows you found out about the pregnancy. She knows you buried the files. Tell me the truth, Tinsley, or I swear to God I will throw you out of this house tonight with nothing but the skin on your back!"
"Let go of me!" Tinsley screamed, twisting her wrist free. She backed away, her face twisting into an ugly sneer. The sweet, adoring girl he thought he had married was entirely gone. "Fine! You want the truth? Yes! I found out! I went to the clinic to make sure she was truly blocked from ever coming back to you, and the doctor told me her hormone levels had suddenly spiked—that she was pregnant. He hadn't even called her yet to give her the news!"
Merrick felt like he had been struck by lightning. "You knew... you knew she was carrying my child, and you let me divorce her? You let me call her barren in front of my family?"
"She had one child, Merrick! That's what the early scan said!" Tinsley yelled back, her voice shrill. "How was I supposed to know she was hiding three more inside her? I did it for us! If you had known she was pregnant, you would have stayed with her out of obligation! You would have never given me this house, this life, this ring!"
"You ruined my life," Merrick whispered, his hands trembling as the magnitude of her deception settled into his bones. "You stole my children from me."
"Oh, please! You wanted out just as much as I did!" Tinsley laughed, a sharp, hysterical sound. "You loved the excuse she gave you! But don't think you're throwing me out, Merrick. We are officially married. The license was signed and filed by the officiant before the reception even started. I am Mrs. Thornwell."
"I will annul it by morning," Merrick slammed his hand on the vanity table. "Fraud. Deception. You will get nothing."
"Are you sure about that?" Tinsley picked up her phone, tapping the screen and turning it toward him. "Before I agreed to marry you, Merrick, your mother made you sign that new corporate restructuring agreement to protect the family shares from Lennox, remember? You signed it last week without reading the fine print because you trusted her."
Merrick’s blood ran cold. "What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything. Your mother did," Tinsley smiled, a venomous, triumphant expression. "Helena wanted to make sure that if I ever left you, the money stayed in the Thornwell trust. But the trust was set up with a specific clause: if you divorce or annul within the first year without a living heir born from the current marriage, forty percent of the voting shares automatically transfer to the co-signer of the trust to prevent corporate raiding."
Merrick stared at her, his breathing shallow. "The co-signer... is my mother."

"And your mother is currently completely incapacitated by a stroke," Tinsley said, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "The doctors just called from the clinic while you were out playing hero at the public hospital. She can't speak, Merrick. She can't sign anything. And guess who she appointed as her healthcare proxy and power of attorney last month when she thought I was her perfect little angel?"
Tinsley leaned in close, her eyes glittering with cold malice. "Me. If you try to divorce me, if you try to kick me out, I will freeze your corporate assets using your mother's name. You won't have the money to fight Lennox for custody, and you won't have the money to keep this mansion. You're trapped, Merrick. Welcome to your new marriage."
