Chapter 10 - Dawn on Lake MichiganThree days later, the morning sun broke over Lake Michigan with a clear, golden brilliance that seemed to wash the city clean of its October chill.

From the balcony of a private penthouse overlooking the harbor, the view of Chicago was breathtaking. The distant silhouette of the Blackstone Hotel looked small and harmless from this height, just another brick building swallowed by a city that never stopped moving.

Hannah stood wrapped in a heavy cashmere robe, holding a steaming cup of black coffee between both hands. Her wrists were healing, the ugly yellow and purple bruises fading into soft shadows beneath her sleeves.

Behind her, the sliding glass door clicked open.

Damen stepped out onto the balcony, wearing a simple dark sweater, holding two croissants on a small china plate. He didn't look like a mob boss anymore. He looked like a man who had finally put down a very heavy burden he had carried for nine years.

"The federal prosecutor's office just released their final brief," Damen said, setting the plate on the glass table between them. "Vance didn't even make it to his arraignment. His own associates turned over his offshore accounts before sunrise."

Hannah took a slow sip of her coffee, looking out at the glittering water. "And West Haven?"

"The property has been acquired by a new philanthropic trust," Damen said, leaning against the balcony railing beside her. "Fully funded. Fully staffed. And Dr. Evans's old office is currently being converted into a modern pediatric triage wing." He paused, turning his gray eyes toward her. "They need a head nurse. Someone stubborn, competent, and entirely immune to bureaucratic nonsense."

Hannah turned her head, a slow, genuine smile spreading across her face—not the tight, exhausted smile she had forced herself to wear for twelve hours straight in a dying clinic, but a real, effortless smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

"Does the new job come with a security detail?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Damen's lips twitched into a rare, genuine smile.

"Only if you promise to let the boss carry your bag."
