Chapter 1 - THE CRACK IN THE GLASSThe silence in the kitchen wasn’t just quiet; it was suffocating. It felt heavy enough to crush the air right out of my lungs. My shoulder throbbed with a searing, white-hot agony where Victoria’s wooden hockey stick had collided with me moments before. Beneath my chest, four-year-old Lily was still trembling, her small fingers clutching desperately at the fabric of my maid’s uniform.

Across the gleaming marble and white-tiled floor, the broken remnants of Victoria’s carefully constructed life lay scattered. The hockey stick rolled to a stop against the base of the island, its wood splintered slightly at the impact point. But the real destruction wasn't physical. It was the absolute, frozen shock locked inside Nathan Cole’s eyes.
Nathan stared at me. Then he looked down at Lily, whose tear-streaked face was still buried in my neck, her small voice echoing ghost-like in the vast room: Papá.
"Victoria," Nathan’s voice didn't rise. It dropped into a dangerous, glacial register that made even me—someone who had known him intimately years ago—shiver. "Answer me. Did you know?"
Victoria’s composure, usually as ironclad as the corporate empire Nathan had built from the ground up, shattered instantly. The pristine white designer dress she wore suddenly looked like camouflage for a predator caught in the open.
"Nathan, please, you’re letting a hysterical maid and a bastard child manipulate you!" Victoria’s voice pitched upward, frantic and sharp. She lunged forward, her manicured fingers clawing desperately at the lapel of Nathan’s tailored suit jacket. "She planned this! She’s been creeping around your mansion for months, playing the sympathetic, quiet servant, waiting for the exact right moment to trap you with a fabricated bloodline! Look at her—she’s a common thief of opportunities!"
"Stop," Nathan commanded. It was a single word, but it held the weight of a billionaire accustomed to moving markets and crushing competitors with a nod. He didn't flinch away from Victoria, but his eyes narrowed into razor-thin slits. "I asked you a simple question, Victoria. Did you know that Grace had a child, and did you know that child was mine?"
Victoria froze, her mouth half-open, a silent gasp escaping her lips. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her looking like a porcelain doll drained of paint.
"She threatened us, Nathan," I finally spoke, my voice raspy and trembling as I shifted my weight to shield Lily further. "She didn't just know. She threatened to ruin us. She offered me hush money three weeks ago. When I refused to take the bribe and disappear, she told me your power and your lawyers would ensure Lily and I were crushed into dust. She said... she said no one would ever believe a maid."
Nathan slowly turned his head back to me. The pain in his gaze was palpable—a raw, visceral agony of betrayal that cut through all the years of silence and separation. He remembered the love we had shared before the money, before the mansion, before the cruel twists of fate tore us apart. But beneath that pain, a terrifying darkness was beginning to wake.
"Is that true?" Nathan whispered, taking one slow, deliberate step toward Victoria. "Did you threaten them in my own home?"
Victoria’s eyes darted frantically toward the back door, then back to Nathan. Realizing her lies had collapsed under the crushing weight of reality, her expression morphed from panic into pure, venomous hatred. She dropped her hands from his chest and stepped back, a cold, mocking smile twisting her lips.
"So what if I did?" Victoria spat, her voice losing its frantic edge and turning venomous. "Look at her, Nathan! Look at what you’re willing to trade our future for! We are supposed to be married in two months! We are social royalty! And you’re going to throw away a multi-billion-dollar merger, our status, everything I built for you, over a weeping maid and a brat born in the gutter?"
Nathan didn't yell. He didn't raise a fist. He simply looked at Victoria as if she were a stranger he was meeting for the very first time.
"Pack your things, Victoria," Nathan said softly, his voice cutting through the kitchen like a razor. "And security will escort you off my property in five minutes. If you are still here when I return from the study, I will ensure you never work, breathe, or step foot in this city again."
Victoria stood frozen for a beat, her chest heaving with furious breaths. Then, with a look of absolute murder directed straight at me and little Lily, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the kitchen, her heels clicking furiously against the floor until the heavy oak front door slammed shut behind her.
The kitchen fell dead silent once more.
Nathan slowly dropped to his knees, ignoring the expensive fabric of his trousers brushing against the dirty kitchen tiles. He stopped a few feet away from us, his hands hovering uncertainly in the air, trembling slightly.
"Lily," Nathan whispered, his voice cracking.
My little girl peeked out from behind my shoulder, her big, tear-filled eyes locking onto the man she had secretly watched and admired for three months. Slowly, hesitantly, Lily reached out a tiny hand and touched Nathan’s cheek.

"Hi, Papa," she whispered.
And in that exact moment, the foundation of the Cole empire didn't just shake—it began to burn. But little did we know, Victoria’s exit was not a retreat. It was the opening salvo of a war that would try to destroy us all.
