Chapter 1 - The Midnight MisunderstandingThe rain pelted the stone porch of the Sterling estate as Eleanor Sterling stepped out, wrapping her cashmere robe tighter against the chill. Her sharp, calculating eyes swept over Daniel Carter—his faded navy work shirt smelling faintly of motor oil, his broad shoulders damp, and his battered pickup truck idling in the driveway.

"Well, Victoria," Eleanor said, a warm, knowing smile spreading across her lips as she glanced between her daughter and the mechanic. "Aren't you going to introduce your gentleman caller? Tell your boyfriend to stay for dinner. It’s freezing out, and a handsome man shouldn't be driven away empty-handed."
Victoria felt the blood drain from her face. "Mother, no—he's not—he’s just a company mechanic who gave me a ride because my car broke down."
Daniel stepped forward, offering a polite, calm nod. "Good evening, Mrs. Sterling. I’m Daniel. I should really be heading back; my daughter is waiting."
Eleanor didn’t flinch. Instead, her smile turned razor-sharp. "A man who mentions his children on a first late-night meeting is either a terrible liar or a very good father. Either way, the roast is still warm, Daniel. Step inside before you catch pneumonia. Victoria, stop standing there like a statue and take his jacket."
Victoria stared at her mother, completely paralyzed. Eleanor had never invited anyone impromptu into the estate, let alone a blue-collar worker from the Sterling Global motor pool.
