Chapter 1 - THE MIDNIGHT BRIEFING AND THE FIRST CRACK IN THE ARMORThe air between us grew so dense it felt difficult to breathe. Evelyn didn't flinch at my question about hazard pay; instead, a dangerous, knowing smile touched the corners of her lips. The amber light from the harbor cut across her face, highlighting the subtle tension in her jaw—a woman standing at the edge of a corporate precipice, choosing to lean forward rather than step back.

"The danger is real, Austin," Evelyn whispered, closing the remaining inches between us until the heat radiating from her body chased away the chill of the air conditioning. Her fingers lightly brushed the lapel of my jacket. "And as for the promotion? Let’s just say that if we survive Monday morning, you won't just be clearing your family's debts. You'll be sitting beside me at the head of the table."
My breath hitched. She knew. Despite my meticulous efforts to keep my personal life—and the crushing weight of my father’s medical and financial debts—hidden behind an impenetrable wall of professionalism, Evelyn had seen right through it.
"How long have you known?" I asked, my voice dropping to a gravelly low.
"From the day you skipped your promotion lunch to take a frantic call from a debt collector," she replied softly, her eyes holding mine with an unflinching, devastating sincerity. "You think you're the only one who watches people, Austin? I notice things. Especially the people who are too proud to beg."
Before I could process the depth of her surveillance—and the strange, intoxicating care hidden beneath it—a sharp, violent pounding echoed against the heavy wooden hotel room door.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
"Evelyn? Are you in there?" a cold, familiar voice sliced through the silence. It was Richard Vance, the senior board member spearheading the hostile takeover, and right beside him was my direct supervisor, a man who had been looking for any excuse to fire me.

Evelyn’s eyes widened, the armor snapping back into place with terrifying speed. She grabbed my collar, pulled me down toward her face, and whispered her final command before the storm broke:
"Remember, Austin... you’re my shield now. Don't let them see us shake."
