Chapter 1 - THE SILENT FORTRESS

The screen of my phone flickered, Daniel’s frantic face staring back at me like a ghost caught in headlights. His mouth opened and closed twice before any sound managed to crawl out.

“Mara,” he choked out, his voice cracking with a pathetic blend of panic and disbelief. “What do you mean, you changed the reservation? We leave in two weeks. The tickets are locked in.”

“Locked in under my corporate traveler identification number, Daniel,” I said, my voice as calm and steady as a surgical blade. I leaned back into the plush leather of my home office chair, sipping my glass of reserve Pinot Noir. “And as chief compliance counsel for Northstar Maritime Holdings, I have a very particular set of privileges. For instance, when a primary cardholder flags a potential internal conflict of interest regarding secondary passengers traveling on executive comp passes, the system doesn’t just cancel. It reroutes.”

“Reroutes to where?” he barked, panic tightening his throat. In the background, I could hear Vanessa’s shrill voice shouting something about dinner.

“To a very special secondary processing queue in downtown Seattle,” I smiled faintly, letting my eyes lock with his through the camera lens. “You and Claire are welcome to go on your family healing cruise, darling. But your suite has been downgraded to a lower-deck interior storage-adjacent bunk, your excursion passes have been revoked due to unresolved liability flags, and your boarding status is currently listed under Pending Corporate Audit. Have a wonderful time catching up with Vanessa. Try not to get seasick.”

I tapped the red disconnect button before he could scream another syllable.

The silence in the house was absolute, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the hallway. For ten years, I had built a fortress around this marriage, laying down brick after brick of quiet compromise, while Daniel and his ex-wife built a wrecking ball disguised as "co-parenting."

My phone buzzed instantly. A text from Daniel: Open the portal back up right now or I swear to God I will file for abandonment.

May you like

I laughed out loud, typing back a single sentence: File whatever you like, Daniel. But remember who owns the house, the car, and the retainer on your favorite divorce attorney.

I locked my phone, walked over to the balcony doors, and looked out over the city lights. The game hadn't just changed. I had rewritten the rulebook, burned the old one, and sent the ashes directly to Vanessa’s real estate office. And this was only chapter one.
