Chapter 1 - THE SYNCHRONIZED STRIKE

The second hand on my cracked watch ticked past 1:59 p.m. and snapped to 2:00 p.m.

Before Julian could process my warning, the heavy mahogany double doors of our mansion blew inward with the force of a battering ram. Splintered wood flew across the pristine marble foyer. Heavy tactical boots thundered against the floorboards as dozens of federal agents clad in black body armor and carrying automatic rifles swarmed the ballroom.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!"

The deafening roar echoed off the crystal chandeliers. The terrified gasps of our high-society guests filled the air, instantly drowning out the light, ambient jazz music that had been playing moments before. Champagne flutes dropped from trembling hands, shattering on the floor.

Julian’s face drained of color. His jaw dropped, his gaze darting wildly from the tactical units securing every exit to the man stepping through the center of the formation.

It was Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation, despite the irony—holding an arrest warrant signed by a federal judge.

"Arthur Vance! Julian Vance!" Agent Marcus’s voice boomed across the silent room, cutting through the chaos like a knife. "You are both under arrest for racketeering, securities fraud, international money laundering, and tax evasion. Put your hands behind your back!"

Arthur Vance, the untouchable patriarch of the Vance conglomerate, lunged forward, his face flushed with unmitigated rage. "This is an outrage! Do you know who I am? I demand to speak to the Attorney General right now! My lawyers will strip your badges before the sun sets!"

"Your lawyers won't be doing much of anything from a federal penitentiary, Mr. Vance," Agent Marcus replied coldly, signaling two agents to step forward.

They grabbed Arthur by his bespoke Italian wool shoulders, shoving his arms behind his back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs. Arthur’s wife, Beatrice, shrieked, clutching her designer pearls as another agent approached her husband.

Julian stood frozen in place, his arm still awkwardly draped around Chloe. The twenty-two-year-old mistress was now trembling violently, her carefully applied makeup streaked with tears as she realized the golden parachute she had latched onto was made of lead.

"Dad? What is this? This is a mistake!" Julian stammered, his voice cracking with panic. He looked frantically toward the federal agents, then down at me, still lying against the ruined gift table. "Clara! Tell them! Tell them this is a misunderstanding, you know our family doesn't—"

I didn't answer right away. Using the edge of the mahogany table for support, I slowly pushed myself up. My maternity dress was stained with dirt and a drop of blood, but my posture was rigid, unbreakable.

I looked Julian dead in the eye, letting out a cold, hollow laugh.

"Your family doesn't what, Julian? Run a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise funded by offshore accounts and human trafficking fronts?" I stepped forward, smoothing down my skirt. "Or did you forget who actually processed your father's digital signatures for the last five years?"

Julian recoiled as if I had struck him. "You..."

"That's right," Agent Marcus said, walking past the handcuffed Arthur and stopping directly in front of me. He pulled a crisp leather notebook from his tactical vest, offering me a respectful nod. "Special Agent Marcus, reporting in, Director Vance. The primary servers in the Cayman Islands have been seized. All asset forfeiture orders have been executed. The Vance empire is officially gone."

The gasps in the room turned to dead silence.

May you like

Director Vance?

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide with sheer horror, his brain struggling to assemble a puzzle that suddenly made terrifying, inescapable sense.
