Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFESSION

"Director... what?" Julian choked out, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked at Agent Marcus, then back down at me, his knees suddenly buckling under the weight of the revelation. "Marcus, you're addressing her? My wife is an accountant! She doesn't even know how to use a corporate spreadsheet without my help!"

"Your help, Julian?" I stepped closer, the sharp click of my flats echoing on the marble. "The only thing you ever managed on your own was ruining your father’s golf handicap."

Agent Marcus stepped aside, snapping open a secure digital tablet and holding it up for the room to see. On the screen was a secure government organizational chart, glowing with top-secret clearance markers. At the very top, under the Department of Justice's elite White-Collar Financial Crimes Division, was my name: Clara Vance, Director of Special Investigations (Undercover).

"For the past three years," Agent Marcus announced to the stunned crowd of elites, "Mrs. Vance has operated as our deep-cover asset inside the Vance Group. Every shell company you utilized, every illegal tax shelter you established in the British Virgin Islands, and every bribe paid to municipal officials was logged, tracked, and authenticated by her."

Beatrice Vance let out a guttural sob, collapsing backward into the arms of a horrified bridesmaid. "No... no, that's impossible! She was just a quiet orphan from the suburbs! We vetted her! Arthur said she had no backbone!"

"Arthur's vetting process was about as thorough as his ethics," I replied smoothly, wiping a speck of dust off my shoulder. "He wanted a meek, obedient ornament who would look pretty at charity galas and never ask questions about where the money came from. So, I gave him exactly what he wanted. For fourteen months, I played the invisible, overlooked wife while downloading every single encrypted hard drive in his private safe."

Julian lunged forward, blind with rage and betrayal, forgetting for a second that he was surrounded by armed federal agents. "You bitch! You lied to me every single day! You slept in my bed while plotting to destroy everything my family built!"

Before Julian could take another step, two tactical officers tackled him to the floor, slamming his face against the very gift wrap he had shoved me into minutes earlier. The metal cuffs ratcheted tightly around his wrists.

Chloe shrieked, backing away until she hit a pillar. "I didn't know anything! I swear! I'm just his girlfriend! Don't arrest me!"

"Oh, Chloe, don't worry," I said, offering her a sweet, venomous smile. "Your name is on the title of the penthouse apartment in downtown Manhattan—the one purchased entirely with embezzled pension funds from the Vance Logistics workers. You'll have plenty of time to explain your innocence to a federal judge."

Chloe burst into hysterical tears, sinking to the floor in a heap of designer silk.

Arthur Vance, struggling against his restraints, glared at me with pure venom. "You think you’ve won, Clara? You think the courts will let you walk away with a dime? The Vance name controls half the judges in this state!"

"Not anymore, Arthur," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

A tall man in a tailored dark suit stepped past the broken double doors. It was federal prosecutor Thomas Sterling, flanked by a team of legal aides carrying heavy briefcases.

"Every single judge tied to the Vance payroll was picked up twenty minutes ago by the state police," Prosecutor Sterling announced, walking straight toward Arthur. He tossed a thick stack of blue-stamped documents onto the ruined buffet table. "Your warrants, Mr. Vance. Bail has been officially denied across the board. You are going away for a very, very long time."
